The RFU also announced that they intend names Jones' successor by the end of the 2019/20 season who will work alongside the Australian until he steps down.

Despite Jones saying he would be leaving the post after Japan 2019, Will Greenwood is not surprised that he has signed an extension.

"I'm not overly surprised - he is such a sneaky little Australian," said Greenwood on The Offload podcast.

Eddie Jones says he is keen to ensure England have a sustainable future after he leaves his post

"He comes in, gets the job done and does wonderfully well but I think one of his first press conferences - and I paraphrase slightly - he said that post World Cup he was off to watch some cricket in the Caribbean. It was in the best Steve Redgrave style - you would never see him near a rugby field again!

"What I think has happened though is that the new CEO at the RFU has shifted their focus as to who should come in and replace Eddie. It seemed that there was always a prerequisite that the only person who could ever coach England was someone with international experience.

"I think this transitional period suggest that they are going to go 'boot room mentality' and they are going to bring and promote someone from within as the All Blacks have done.

"The current focus might be someone like Rob Baxter who has worked with Eddie, although he is slightly outside the inner guard. The others, of course, are a Paul Gustard and more likely a Steve Borthwick.

"The other name you have to consider is someone who has coached so wonderfully well in the Premiership - like Mark McCall."
