New Zealand captain Kieran Read is on course to face the Lions in the first Test despite still recovering from injury.

Read is regarded as the best No 8 in the world and would slot straight back into the side despite not playing since breaking his thumb in playing for the Crusaders in April - however, he could be fit for New Zealand's warm-up game against Samoa on Friday 16 June.

"'It's got better and it's still in the old cast, another week I think and then I'll be good," Read told TVNZ: "So this comes off in a week and a bit, then I have few weeks to get myself right."

The British & Irish Lions tour of New Zealand starts on 3rd June, exclusively on Sky Sports.

Read added that he was delighted that the Lions had finally arrived and was looking forward to watching them in action in the warm-up games.

The Lions arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday and will play their first game on 3 June against a Provincial XV. The first Test against the back-to-back world champions will on 24 June.

"Once every 12 years means, really, that you'll play them once in your career - so it's a very special time," added Read to NZ Newswire

"I can't wait to see them out on the field, it'll probably give us more of an indication of how they'll play and what they'll bring."

The jersey pays homage to the 113-year history between the British and Irish Lions and the All Blacks and features a new one-off designed All Blacks crest, inspired by that worn by the team in 1930. It features the iconic silver fern All Blacks logo and the years '1904' and '2017' inscribed above and below.
