Dan Carter is looking forward to keeping a tight rein on Will Greenwood as he joins our commentary team for Saturday's Champions Cup final between Clermont and Saracens

Carter is widely touted as one of the best players to have ever pulled on a rugby jersey and has been named the IRB Player of the Year a record three times - an honour he shares with Richie McCaw.

After helping New Zealand to back-to-back World Cup wins, Carter hung up his international boots and headed to Racing 92 where, in 2016, he guided them to their first French Top 14 title in 26 years.

Carter was in formidable form in that Top 14 final where, despite going down to 14 men, he produced a man-of-the match performance in their 29-21 win over Toulon.

It was another medal to add to his trophy cabinet that has everything in it except a Champions Cup winners medal.

He came close last year but Racing 92 fell at the final hurdle when they were beaten 21-9 by Saracens in the Champions Cup final.

Carter knows all about playing against Clermont and Saracens but is backing Saracens to defend their title when they clash at Murrayfield on Saturday.

"Saracens have shown what they are capable of over the last few years and Clermont are really going to have to get up if they want to beat a quality Saracens side," Carter told Sky Sports News HQ.

Saracens are favourites to win the Champions Cup final against Clermont, according to Carter

"They are such a well-drilled unit - I am speaking from experience after playing in the final with them last year.

"In dry conditions, Clermont are a team who like to use the ball. If they can string a few phases together, be patient, then they may have a chance, but if I had to pick it now it would be Sarries."

Carter, who was speaking at the Rugby Players' Association Awards where he was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, is looking forward to seeing things from the other side of the camera as he joins the likes of Will Greenwood and Scott Quinnell as part our our punditry team.

"I'm looking forward to it - usually I am on the other side playing which is my preference but I'm looking forward to it and it will be something a little bit different.

"Hopefully I will be able to give a bit of an insight into what is going to happen and try and keep Will under the reins before he get's too excited."
