Jonny May believes his best rugby days are still ahead of him

England's Jonny May insists he's yet to get back to his best ahead of the opening autumn international against South Africa on November 12

Gloucester winger Jonny May believes he is still developing as a player after recovering from knee surgery at a rehabilitation centre in America.

May won the last of his 19 caps in England's 13-33 loss to Australia that ended their 2015 World Cup journey in the pool stages.

The 26-year-old then suffered a serious knee injury that December during Gloucester's Premiership game with Harlequins at Twickenham.

However, after extensive rehabilitation, May is back and says he still has plenty to give.

"I am still confident that my best days are ahead of me." May told SSN HQ.

"I have wanted to improve and be a better player than I was before - that is what motivated me really."

In his quest to become that better player, May travelled to America to break up the monotony of his rehab where he learnt a lot from NFL players and track athletes.

"I went out to Michael Johnson's performance centre over in Texas," added May.

"It was something I planned early on after I got injured to break up the rehab and give me something to look forward too. It is an awesome centre and the focus a lot on change of direction, top-end speed and acceleration - all things that are relevant to my game.

"They do a lot of NFL players and track athletes - it was good to be around some new people and refreshing to be in a new place and doing new things after being in a gym on your own for so long."

With Jack Nowell out injured and Chris Ashton banned, May is certain to feature in England's Old Mutual Wealth series which kicks off against South Africa on Nov 12 with Fiji, Argentina and Australia also coming to Twickenham.

England have not beaten South Africa at Twickenham for 10 years and while the Springboks may be going through a serious re-building phase, May says it will still be a formidable challenge.

"Whoever does get the nod against South Africa is going to have to put their bodies on the line and be ready for that," said May.

"It is a huge challenge for us and Eddie Jones made it clear to us that nobody in our squad has beaten South Africa. We have not won since 2006 and even though they may have had a disappointing season so far; for them to come and beat England would turn it all around.

"It is going to be a case of fronting up, matching and going past what they can do physically and then hope to put our game on them as well."
