Regan Grace, the bottom three clubs and the form of the Dragons and Leeds feature in Brian Carney's column this week...

Good week for Regan Grace

St Helens' game against Wigan had pretty much everything you would want for it. The weather was decent, the crowd was huge, and there was the story of it being the first game without Keiron Cunningham. Wigan-Saints derbies don't need extra narrative, but this one had it.

Kyle Amor was then sent off which put Saints up against it, if they weren't already. Then this young player, on such a big stage, announced himself in spectacular fashion. He scored a try on his debut, but it was his runs out of defence that really caught my eye.

Regan Grace's break set up Saints' second try against Wigan

His bravery, his unwillingness to settle for being tackled after making a few yards - he really put it to the Warriors defence and at times they didn't have answers. It was a stunning performance, full of confidence, and if Saints needed a lift as a club and as a team, Grace gave it to them.

Of course he then backed it up with another try against the Tigers, but it wasn't the tries that impressed me, it was the effervescence with which he played - and may that never leave him.

He's going to have good days, bad days and great days. I hope he has plenty of great days, but if he can keep that effervescence, that free way of playing the game, he'll be a man worth watching regardless.

Good week for the Dragons

The Dragons are a brilliant addition to the Super League competition. Every time I've been down there I've enjoyed the experience, and I think it adds a new and incredibly important dimension to Super League having a French team in there.

That said, they are a club that frustrates me. I've been willing them to win something, or at least position themselves at the top of the table for a prolonged period, because it helps them grow the game and attract sponsors. Rugby league is behind other sports in France, so a successful Catalans side will be great for the game in France, and the worldwide game, but they've just never quite managed to do it.

Highlights of Catalans' Round 9 win at Huddersfield

Last year, they failed with all their star signings. This year, they stripped it back a bit, but three weeks ago weren't looking good; they had a draw and four consecutive defeats, and I wasn't sure where they would end up this year. I didn't think it was going to be high, and I was worried about the damage that would do.

They've now put together three wins, including victories over Huddersfield and Salford over Easter.

What Catalans have shown in the last three weeks might be good enough to put them near the top six of the table, and, with a bit of luck, maybe even higher.

While they can be frustratingly inconsistent, for the fourth year in the row they did the double over Easter. I wish them every success in building on that, because I think they're crucial to our game.

Good week for the Rhinos

Leeds had a great performance on Easter Monday after that big win over Hull on Friday. With Kallum Watkins playing as well as he is, and with Joel Moon's move into the halves being as seamless as it is, this Leeds side might have the most remarkable three years imaginable; going from champions to the Middle 8s, and then to possible champions again.

There's going to a lot of people reassessing the Rhinos now, and almost dismissing 2016. They are absolutely back.

What an Easter period it was for them; a bucket-load of points which puts more distance between them and that heavy defeat to Castleford at the beginning of March.

Since that defeat they've won six out of seven. You now have to look at them as absolutely top four contenders, and you might have to start thinking of them as Grand Finalists, which is not something you would have said a month ago.

Bad week for the bottom three

On trust alone, I will go with Warrington to drag themselves further up the table. Not necessarily because of what I've seen on the field this year, but because I think they have a squad that will nudge the club a little higher as the weeks go on.

But for the other three sides in the bottom four, it's now concerning times. Huddersfield have six points, as do Leigh, and Widnes are on three.

Highlights from the Super League clash between Leeds and Widnes

All those three teams will look at Easter and think there was at least a chance for points, either a win or at least a draw, and yet they've come away with nothing. This applies to Widnes more than anyone else.

After 23 rounds last year, Widnes had won 10 and lost 13. Now they've won one and drawn one out of 10 games. If you take 20 points as the magic mark for top-eight safety, they need to get 17, possibly 18 more points. That means they have to win nine of their next 13 games. You'd have to be honest and say that's going to be beyond them now.

Denis Betts said after the loss to Leeds that as a coach your life is rugby league, so your home life and your social life is affected by the fact that you're not winning games, which makes it very difficult. It's the same for the players.

After the joys of making the top 8 last year, they're back down to earth with a bump. Up next in the league they've got Saints at home, then Salford away, then Hull at home. If they don't get a win out of those three then it's Middle 8s for Widnes.

Huddersfield scored a late try to add a bit of gloss to the scoreline against the Dragons, but they were too casual in that game.

Conversely they were very much in the game against Warrington on Monday. What could have been a brilliant conversion from Danny Brough, had it gone over, would have given them a point. Instead they came away with nothing and they are a club in a fair degree of trouble now.

What they've got coming up is Leeds, Castleford and Catalans. Of course anything could happen, but if you went with favourites in all of those games, you'd say Huddersfield would come away with nothing. That would leave them with 14 games played, and six wins - that's Middle 8s form.

Seb Ikahihifo was their stand-out player against Catalans, but from their most talented player Danny Brough, they got the sublime as well as the ridiculous. He threw an intercept pass, got sin binned, missed a relatively easy goal kick, then kicked a very difficult goal kick and set up a couple of tries.

Highlights of Salford's win over Leigh

A more consistent Brough will give them half a chance, but I haven't seen signs of that consistency coming.

Huddersfield and Widnes have a different pressure on them than Leigh. Realistically, I think the Centurions want to survive a few years in Super League, then set their targets a little higher up in the league once they have established themselves.

They've lost their last five games by an average margin of 10 points, which isn't disgraceful at all, and in fact on Good Friday they pushed Salford very close. But five consecutive losses can be difficult to endure. I've been at clubs that have had runs like that, and a cloud quickly forms overhead.

Highlights from the Super League where Leigh took on Hull FC

The Centurions have Saints, Wakefield, Salford, Hull and Castleford, so life doesn't get any easier.

It's been great to see a club promoted, and I still think they will be in Super League in 2018, but given their position now and the schedule ahead I think they will have to do it through the Middle 8s.

It's brilliant to have Leigh in Super League, and I believe they will be there next year, but the key for them is to stay positive. They have only one goal: to stay out of the relegation zone.

They have until the end of what I think will be the end of the Middle 8s for them to achieve that. So don't let this be a cloud.
