It was an historic weekend for English clubs in the World Club Series after both Wigan and Warrington recorded victories over NRL opposition.

Warrington ended Super League's six-game losing streak in the series when they beat Brisbane on Saturday night, and Wigan followed that up by overpowering Cronulla to claim a record fourth World Club title.

The World Club Series followed two enthralling Super League games where Salford and Leeds both registered away victories.

Brian Carney was at all four fixtures and he has picked out the positives and negatives from the weekend's action.

Good week

Highlights of Wigan's win over Cronulla that saw them crowned World Club champions

Super League: The competition is not without its well-highlighted issues and while the performances of Wigan and Warrington don't change that fact, they will nonetheless bring a very welcome boost to rugby league fans in this country.

The comprehensive nature of both victories was most impressive. It was a very professional approach by the Super League clubs.

Standout stand-offs: Wigan strangled Cronulla and we got further evidence that in George Williams the Warriors have a star with the potential to be world class. He's creative, fast and very tough, everything you look for in a half-back.

There was plenty of pressure on Kevin Brown on his Warrington debut. He came into a side that were really disappointing in round one against Catalans, but aided and abetted by some thunderous displays from people like Mike Cooper, Brown brought his 'A game' when it was needed most.

Highlights of Leeds' thrilling victory over Leigh on Friday

Super League: It was a good week for the Betfred Super League in another sense. We only had two matches but both of them were highly entertaining.

Anybody who tuned into Sky Sports on Thursday night to see Salford's impressive win, and Leeds overcoming a really gutsy display from Leigh 24 hours later, could not help but be impressed by the quality of the entertainment.

Bad week

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan was critical of the referee but paid credit to Wigan

Cronulla and Brisbane: Cronulla waited 49 years for their maiden Premiership victory and when their players spoke to the media last week, maybe it was just words but they spoke about how much they wanted to add a second title to the club's name. Having won just one, to be presented with the chance of a second in just five months was special.

I'm looking at their lead-up to the game where they go to Paris for a day, and I don't think there's a man in their matchday 17 that can say they did the jersey proud.

Twelve months ago, if you offered Cronulla the chance to play in the World Club Challenge, I wonder how serious they would have taken it.

Warrington produced an inspired performance to beat Brisbane

It was also a bad week for Brisbane duo Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt. Tipped as the future Queensland State of Origin half-back partnership, they were given no time and space by a rabid Wolves pack.

Leigh Centurions: This comes with a major caveat. It's a bad week for Leigh because they're zero from two and you can begin to chase wins, but we are early in the season and against Leeds they showed plenty to give their supporters something to smile about.

A first win will be very welcome when it comes.

Highlights of Huddersfield's home loss to Salford

Huddersfield Giants: For a side that were drilled so hard in defensive duties during the off-season, that produced a great display against Warrington in pre-season and were pretty good against Widnes, there was some slack defending against Salford.

It's not quite back to the drawing board for Rick Stone but a home game against Salford would have been one they'd be looking to get maximum points from.

It's a setback of sorts. There's still plenty of work to do at Huddersfield.
