Kallum Watkins admits he has yet to do himself justice on the international stage as he prepares to win his 18th cap for England.

The 25-year-old Leeds centre has been an ever-present for England since making his debut in 2012 but he goes into Saturday's first-ever clash with Scotland in Coventry still seeking to fulfil his potential.

"I certainly agree with that," said Watkins. "The big thing for me is try to perform at the best in the international scene, that's something I desire."

Despite being named in the 2015 Super League Dream Team, Watkins largely failed to impress during England's series win over New Zealand last autumn and, by his own admission, he underperformed in their 17-16 defeat to the Kiwis in their opening Ladbrokes Four Nations Series match in Huddersfield.

"I had a couple of chances at the weekend and just didn't take them," he said. "When you get limited opportunities, you need to take them.

"For me it's backing myself and getting myself more involved. It's important for me to gain that confidence and to do the things that I'm good at.

"I'm going to continue to do that and improve, do the extras in training I need to do to get that extra preparation, but in the games I've got to do it."

That defeat at the John Smith's Stadium means England must not only beat Steve McCormack's Bravehearts but then topple world champions Australia in London a week later if they are to keep alive their hopes of a first Four Nations title.

Watkins insists England will improve from their agonising opening loss and says they will not underestimate the challenge of the Scots, who were overrun 54-12 by the Kangaroos in their opening game.

"Our result was disappointing but in terms of our desire it was right up there, we just needed to be smarter," said Watkins.

"I think we'll learn from it. Combining with each other as a group is going to take time, you have limited time with the international team and you've got to make the most of it.

Graham out of Scotland clash

James Graham ruled out with a knee injury but could face Kangaroos

"This week is a huge opportunity for us and we know we've got to be at our best.

"Scotland are a great side, they're a team just getting together and they're working things out themselves as well, gradually they're building into a better team as well so we now it's going to be a tough game.

"There's plenty of respect, they've plenty of good players throughout Super League and the NRL as well so it should be a cracking game."

Watkins knows all about the Scotland backs, having come up against two of them, Lachlan Coote and Kane Linnett, when Leeds lost to North Queensland Cowboys in the 2016 World Club Challenge.

McCormack also has available Super League Grand Finalists Lewis Tierney and Matty Russell and Huddersfield half-backs Danny Brough and Ryan Brierley.

"They are real big in the outside backs," said Watkins. "They've got a couple of NRL players in there that will cause some problems.

"Coote at full-back is a star player and obviously with Brierley and Brough, they'll combine what they do in Huddersfield colours and they'll continue to improve that team going forward.

"They are certainly dangerous with the ball. We've got to show them a lot of respect.

"Obviously it's an England-Scotland game so there's going to be a lot of fire and a lot of excitement so I'm just looking forward to being a part of it."
