Denis Betts leaves Widnes Vikings as head coach

Denis Betts has left his position as head coach of Widnes Vikings.

Betts has been in charge of the Vikings since 2010 but has left the club following a run of poor form and will be replaced by Francis Cummins on an interim basis.

Widnes confirmed Betts' depature in a statement on Thursday, which read: "Widnes Vikings have announced that the club has ended the contact of Head Coach, Denis Betts, with immediate effect.

"The club would like to put on record its thanks for his contribution, for eight seasons.

"We are grateful that Francis Cummins will be stepping up as our Head Coach, on an interim basis."

Widnes were forced to play in the Qualifiers in 2017 after finishing the regular season bottom of Super League and the Vikings have struggled again this season.

The Vikings are currently bottom of the table having picked up just three wins. Widnes suffered a 19-6 defeat to Wakefield on Friday and have now lost their last eight games in all competitions.
