Hull KR interim head coach James Webster says he is in the dark over the appointment of his new boss.

Rovers brought their former captain back to the club in March and placed him in charge for the rest of the season following the departure of Chris Chester as head coach three games into the campaign.

As well as coaching the first team, the former Wakefield boss was given a remit to start implementing plans for 2017 and beyond when he becomes part of the backroom staff working under the new head coach.

The club have been linked with a move for former England head coach Steve McNamara, who is currently assistant at Sydney Roosters, but Hull KR chairman Neil Hudgell has yet to make an announcement.

"It's probably the best-kept secret in rugby league at the moment," Webster said. "I haven't got a clue. I haven't asked and they haven't told me. They will make it public when they decide.

"Neil has come out and said they have a deal in principle with somebody but what that is I'm not sure. Because of the way things are at the moment, they can't announce that, so we'll wait and see what happens."

Hull KR's failure, for the second successive year, to secure their Super League status by the end of the regular season has held up the announcement.

And Webster, who must guide the team to safety through the Super 8s Qualifiers, says the system is also hampering the recruitment plans of the bottom four Super League clubs.

"I just think it allows the big clubs to keep getting bigger every year," he said. "At the moment, who's been able to recruit? Only the top couple of clubs.

"This concept in my opinion doesn't help the movement of players across the board, it just keeps them at the top clubs."

Hull KR open their Qualifiers campaign against surprise package Batley on Sunday, August 7.
