Wigan's Sam Tomkins has the World Cup in his sights following a two-year spell away from international rugby.

Tomkins, who has been suffering with injury, was dropped from coach Wayne Bennett's squad after four years as England's No 1, from 2010-14.

But he says he is not worried about his absence from the international scene and is determined to regain a spot in the England team.

"I love playing for England and I want to do it plenty more times yet," he said. "I want to try and do everything I can to try and get on that plane."

Tomkins faces strong competition for the No 1 shirt from others, including Jonny Lomax (St Helens) and Zak Hardaker (Castleford), who have replaced him in his absence from the England squad.

"There's a lot of competition and that's great for the national side," he said. "Wayne Bennett is a great coach and you want to give someone of his coaching ability as many options as possible.

"I don't think the spine has been so competitive for a long time in an England side. From your half-backs, to your nine and your one, I think there's a number of people who can play those positions."

However, the 28-year-old full-back is confident that the 2017 World Cup is an achievable target for him and has been encouraged by Bennett to be hopeful of making a return to the England side, in their upcoming Australia-based tournament in three months.

"I spoke to the coach and he said 'you hadn't played any games when the squad was being reassessed so I'm not putting you in for now but it doesn't have a bearing on who's going to play in the World Cup. That's months away'.

"So it doesn't bother me. I know it's down to me to get in that squad."

Tomkins missed the first four months of the 2017 season, recovering from injury but is set for his sixth game back against second place Leeds in the final round of the regular season at the DW Stadium on Friday.

He said: "I'm feeling good. The body is getting better and I'm feeling more comfortable playing week in, week out.

"I'm just looking to find some consistency at the back end of the year."
