Shaun Wane says there's more to come from Wigan Warriors

Wigan coach Shaun Wane watched his side thrash last year's runners-up Warrington 38-16 to go top of the Betfred Super League and insisted there is even more to come from them.

Rookie winger Liam Marshall scored four tries on only his second appearance as the Warriors shrugged off the absence of nine senior players through injury to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season and keep the Wolves rooted to the foot of the table.

"We've had a good start but we can play better," Wane said. "Once we get some players back we'll improve, but so will other teams.

"It was a good win and, after the week we've had, I'm happy to get two points.

"We're not going to go overboard and pat ourselves on the back. We'll have a tough period in the season.

"We're playing with a bit of confidence but we came here showing Warrington lots of respect. There is no doubt Warrington will be there at the end, they have too many good players not to."

Wigan never looked back after racing into a 16-0 lead inside 17 minutes thanks to two tries from 20-year-old Marshall and one from centre Anthony Gelling.

Marshall, a trainee accountant who was playing part-time rugby for Swinton just a few months ago, completed his hat-trick nine minutes into the second half and added a fourth 12 minutes from the end.

"He was good, I thought the way he finished was fantastic," Wane said. "I was very impressed with him. Our attack is a lot better than this time last year. I was disappointed with conceding three tries but I'm happy with the composure and our desire to defend."

Wane was pleased with half-backs George Williams and Thomas Leuluai and had special praise for skipper Sean O'Loughlin.

"That was one of his best games for a long time," he said. "He was absolutely fantastic. I was so impressed with the way he carried the ball, he's a smart player."

Wane confirmed that second rower John Bateman is facing another three-month lay-off after undergoing further scans on his shoulder injury, ruling him out of England's Test match against Samoa in Sydney in May.

Trailing 20-0, Warrington pulled a try back just before half-time through Ryan Atkins and added two others late on through Tom Lineham and Rhys Evans but finished a well-beaten side and will travel to Leigh on Thursday looking for their first league win.

"We're doing it tough at the moment," said Wolves coach Tony Smith. "We expected a tough game but we certainly didn't want a scoreline like that, particularly at half-time. A lot of the damage was done in the first half.

"We've got a dressing room full of boys who are hurting at the moment but they are trying really hard.

"They're a bit frustrated with how we're playing and where we're sitting in the table.

"We've just got to work that through and toughen up. That will come but i hurts for our supporters and I can feel that.

"We went through a slump last year, so we all know what losing is about, it's how you handle it, how you ride it out and learn from it. We will look back at this little period and it will do us good, but it's horrible while you're in it."

Smith confirmed that scrum-half Dec Patton was dropped to make way for a first start by 20-year-old Harvey Livett, whose performance encouraged his coach.

"He was good in patches, a bit like us," Smith said. "It was hard for him to shine but I thought he handled it well. He's a talented young guy who has a good future. We need a bit more up front at the moment, that's where Wigan had an advantage over us tonight."
