Michael McIlorum is facing up to six months on the sidelines after suffering a suspected broken and dislocated ankle during Wigan's World Club Series defeat to Brisbane on Saturday.
The Warriors hooker was stretched off after landing awkwardly after a challenge from Anthony Milford in the 42-12 loss at the DW Stadium.
McIlorum, who has clocked up over 200 appearances for the Warriors, had been hoping to impress new England boss and current Broncos coach Wayne Bennett.
However, the 28-year-old's hopes of earning a recall to the national side for the first time since the 2013 World Cup are now in tatters.
"Micky could be out for six months," Wane told BBC Radio. "He's playing rugby league and these things happen."
Willie Isa and Matty Smith both suffered knee injuries during the heavy defeat to Brisbane and will see a specialist on Monday.
