Hull captain Gareth Ellis feels the team's decision to lock coach Lee Radford out of the dressing room has been the spark for their superb recent form.

The Black and Whites have gone on to win nine of their past 10 matches to reach the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup and draw level with Warrington at the top of Super League.

The upturn in form coincided with the extraordinary events at Widnes, where Radford and his staff were locked out of the dressing room after a 46-6 hammering.

Reflecting on the extraordinary events at the Stobart Stadium, Ellis insists the players' decision to lock the door on the coaching staff was no slight on Radford but simply a desire to accept responsibility for their own actions.

"As a group of players, we just weren't happy with how we were performing," Ellis said.

Widnes cemented their place at the top of Super League with a convincing 46-6 win over Hull FC

"So we got together as a group of players and said 'this is not right, this is not good, let's knuckle down, let's work harder, let's turn up next week and have a real dig'.

"And that was the crux of it, it was about us taking responsibility. We are fully aware of how hard the coaching staff work for us and we didn't feel we were doing our part in making Hull FC a successful team.

"We knew we had to nip it in the bud, otherwise the season would get away from us."

Hull FC's Gareth Ellis and Hull KR's Shaun Lunt preview the derby between the local rivals on Magic Weekend.

Ellis' men returned to winning ways a week later against Wakefield but the former Leeds and England forward believes the turning point came during the Good Friday derby when they recovered a 20-0 deficit to beat their arch rivals 22-20 by scoring four tries in the last 20 minutes.

"It was miraculous," he said. "They're the fine margins between winning and losing. If we lose that game, then who knows what happens, but thankfully we got away with a great win and you come away with smiles on your faces and we go on the run that we've had."
