Wakefield forward Tinirau Arona has signed a contract extension which could keep him with the Wildcats until the end of 2018.

The 26-year-old joined the Super League club from Cronulla initially on a 12-month deal at the start of the season and has now signed a new one-year contract, with the option of a further year.

"I am very happy, it is good to know that I am secure here for another year and hopefully for a second year too," said Arona, who has featured in 12 of Wakefield's 14 games this season.

"It was the right decision for me and my family, I am now just looking forward to the rest of the season and the next."

Arona is the fifth Wildcats player to extend his stay since the appointment of Chris Chester as head coach, following the retention of Chris Annakin, Mickael Simon, Bill Tupou and Mike Sio.

"It's another great signing for the club," Chester said. "I have been really impressed with his professionalism around the club.

"He offers a lot both on and off the field and I'm delighted we've been able to extend his current deal.

"To have a player of his quality at the club for at least another year is great news for everybody."
