It's first versus third in Super League on Thursday with only point difference separating Warrington and Wigan at the top of the table.

Warrington already have a win over their Lancashire rivals this season, but can Shaun Wane's side go to the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday night and get their revenge?

Here are three key head-to-heads:

Stefan Ratchford v Matty Smith

The game could be decided in the half-backs, as Wigan hope to bring George Williams back into the fold while Warrington are still missing an injured star of their own.

The Wolves have definitely missed Chris Sandow, losing to St Helens and Huddersfield in his absence. Stefan Ratchford has started at half-back in the last three games with Sandow on the sidelines and he also came off the bench in that last meeting with Wigan (when Sandow got injured) to play a pivotal role.

Ratchford scored a try and kicked a goal that night and he also added to his season's tally in last week's win over Widnes. Sometimes a victim of his own versatility, Ratchford has made four of his nine appearances in 2016 off the substitute's bench.

He'll be eager to prove to Tony Smith that he can do the business in Sandow's absence and force his way into the coach's starting 13 plans when the regular half-back returns. A strong showing against Wigan will certainly help his cause.

In the Wigan ranks, Matty Smith made club history against Huddersfield. His one-pointer against the Giants put him top of the club's all-time drop goal list. Despite Dan Sarginson's last-minute try, Smith's kick was essentially another match-winner.

It was yet another example of Smith keeping his composure under pressure. Indeed, just moments earlier, Huddersfield's foray into Wigan's 20 ended not with a drop goal, but a high bomb from Danny Brough. Smith took his chance on the next attack and, as he did earlier in the season against Hull FC, sealed a vital victory for Wigan with the boot.

Smith is a cool head in the Wigan halves and with George Williams back in the 19 this week, Smith could have his regular half-back alongside him. If he does, expect Wigan's attack to start firing on all cylinders again.

Ryan Atkins v Anthony Gelling

You can expect a bit of magic in the centres on Thursday as the two sides go head to head.

For Warrington, Ryan Atkins has played a big part in their good form. He was back to his best against Widnes on Friday after an off-colour performance against Huddersfield.

Highlights from the match between Widnes and Warrington in the Super League

With seven tries this season, he's only fifth on the Warrington try charts, but the centre went on a five-match scoring streak in the games before the defeat to the Giants in Round 11.

Atkins is also racking up impressive numbers elsewhere, averaging 9.04m a drive, the second best in the Warrington side, and throwing 12 offloads, the team's fourth best. There are still a few errors in his game to cut out but in attack, Atkins is one of the most potent centres in Super League.

As for Wigan, they possess a pretty potent weapon of their own in attack in Anthony Gelling. The Warriors welcomed him back for the win over Huddersfield after a three game absence and he responded with an excellent try-scoring performance.

His coach Shaun Wane called him the best centre in Super League ahead of that return against the Giants, and Gelling is certainly capable of magic moments. Some 31 offloads in 2016 is the best in the league and he's missed three games this season.

He's also provided five try assists, the second best in Wigan colours and rates highly in terms of metres made (1,150m at an average gain of 7.10m).

Warrington need to wrap up Gelling's hands if they're to win this one as the centre can wreak havoc on the flanks if allowed to play his own game.

Ben Currie v John Bateman

On display in the second row are two of Super League's finest home-grown talents.

Singled out for special praise by Tony Smith after the win over Widnes, Ben Currie is developing into one of Warrington's key players.

He's a genuine all-rounder, threatening with ball in hand but also capable of getting his hands dirty in defence.

With 10 tries this season and seven laid on for team-mates, his try involvement of 17 that puts him behind only Chris Sandow.

He has also come up with 15 offloads, made 1,150m and completed 298 tackles, forming an effective partnership with tackling machine Jack Hughes in the second row.

He is one of Super League's brightest stars, but on the evidence of 2016, Currie could become one of the very best in the competition.

Wigan boast another impressive English star in their ranks: the workhorse John Bateman.

Mature beyond his 22 years, Bateman deputised as Wigan captain against Huddersfield and it's a job that he seems destined to do permanently in the future.

Bateman leads by example. He is second in Wigan's tackle rankings, notching up 353 hits, though some way behind leader Sam Powell. But he works hard in attack too, carrying 176 times for 1,222m.

Bateman has also crossed for five tries during a season in which the Wigan attack hasn't hit top gear. With the side still missing big names, expect Bateman to lead from the front and take the battle to Warrington on Thursday night.
