Warrington v St Helens: Three key head-to-head battles

It's the Super League leaders Warrington up against St Helens on Friday night. With just one defeat all season, the Wolves are flying.

St Helens, in contrast, have been inconsistent so far, losing four of their nine games. But Tony Smith's side should beware - the Saints haven't lost at the Halliwell Jones since 2011. Here are three key match-ups that could decide this one...

Daryl Clark v James Roby

Two of the best hookers in Super League go on show on Friday night. We all know what both Roby and Clark can do, so sit back and watch two former Man of Steel winners going hammer and tongs at each other from opposite sides of the ruck.

Daryl Clark had a tough first year in Warrington colours. His big money move from Castleford was questioned on several occasions as both Clark and the Wolves struggled in 2015. But fast forward a year and both player and club are flying.

Clark's man of the match performance against Wigan was an indicator of his influence over the Wolves when playing at the top of his game. He finished the full 80 minutes, helping Warrington overcome the loss of Chris Sandow to guide his side home in a big game.

We know all about his strengths, running from dummy half and working the fringes to create opportunities. His 11.24m average gain per drive shows how effective he is with ball in hand and he's made 54 runs from dummy half, also completing five clean breaks. Clark's defence is also impressive, with just seven misses from 167 attempted tackles in 2016. St Helens will need to shut him down to win this one.

Image: James Roby is the benchmark for all hookers

James Roby is the benchmark for all Super League hookers. Time and time again, he racks up impressive numbers and 2016 has proved no different. He's third on St Helens' metres made list with 782m, has the fifth best average gain with 7.45m and comes second on the tackle list with 234 hits so far. His threat from dummy half is a tactic opposition defences look to shut down, but that doesn't make it any easier to stop.

He tops all of Super League in terms of runs from dummy half, dashing out of the ruck on 88 occasions, 20 more than Danny Houghton who is second on the list. Roby comes up against a genuine contender for his England number nine shirt on Friday in Clark, so both men will be looking to gain the upper hand at dummy half, both in the context of this game and their own international prospects.

Tom Lineham v Matty Dawson

There's problems on the wings for St Helens at the moment, while one of Warrington's is starring so far in 2016.

Tony Smith described Tom Lineham as an 'outstanding talent' when he signed the winger from Hull FC ahead of this season. And the 23-year-old is going some way towards proving his boss got that assessment spot on with his form in 2016. With nine tries, he's the joint-top scorer in the Wolves side, while he's also notched up an impressive six clean breaks and 30 tackle busts.

An out-and-out finisher, Lineham also crossed for a hat-trick against Hull KR in February. With 25 tries in 2015 in the Black and White of Hull FC, Lineham finished second in the league's try standings, just two behind Jermaine McGillvary. And given he's just two behind Widnes' Corey Thompson in 2016, don't bet against him going one better and finishing top of the pile in Super League this time round.

St Helens face something of a crisis on the wing this season. With Adam Swift already facing a spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury, they then lost Tommy Makinson with what looks like a season-ending knee injury.

That opens up opportunities for Matty Dawson and Jack Owens. Dawson's shown good try scoring form so far this season, having crossed five times in 2016, the joint-best in the St Helens side. He's also made 12 tackle busts and three clean breaks, proving useful with ball-in-hand.

But defence can occasionally be an issue, with Dawson missing 13 tackles from 116 attempts so far. However, with their two senior wing men on the sidelines for a good while yet, St Helens need Dawson to step up in their absence.

Chris Hill v Alex Walmsley

What a match-up awaits in the front row this week. Alex Walmsley and Kyle Amor provide the biff for St Helens, but Warrington have plenty of firepower in their own front row ranks with Chris Hill and Ashton Sims.

Chris Hill is Warrington's model of consistency. He stepped up to captain the side in 2016 following Joel Monaghan's departure and is a regular England international too. It's easy to see why. Hill's performances rarely drop below a level you'd class as outstanding and his 2016 stats make impressive reading.

He's second on the Warrington metres count with 1157m, fifth on the average gain list with 8.45m a drive, second on the carries list with 137 and top of the tackle count with 296. Oh, and he's missed just two tackles all season. The front rower runs his blood to water week in, week out and he's a big part of what Tony Smith's side have achieved so far this season. Expect nothing different come Friday night.

Running into Hill will be a big mass of 18 stone prop forward in the shape of Alex Walmsley. Nominated for Man of Steel in 2015, it's no surprise to see Walmsley racking up impressive numbers again in 2016. He's second on the St Helens metres list (1089m), sixth on the average gain count (7.41m), has made the joint-second tackle busts (20) and has completed the most carries (147).

That's some serious work with ball in hand from Walmsley and he's formed quite a formidable front row with Kyle Amor for the Saints. Amor did start on the bench in the defeat to Hull FC with Keiron Cunningham looking to spell his front rowers, but expect him and Walmsley take the charge to the Wolves come Friday night.
