Widnes skipper Kevin Brown, the one-pointer and the Ryan Brierley saga make this week's Set of Six.

Brown leading the way

Widnes went back to the top of the Super League table as they beat Hull KR 30-16 at the Select Security Stadium on Friday and the man at the centre of all that was great about their performance was skipper Kevin Brown.

Head coach Denis Betts claimed that Brown is  "international class," after an superb performance from the half-back. Whether Brown will play any part of Wayne Bennett's England plans remains to be seen but if he keeps on performing like this then he will be hard to ignore.

The Brierley saga

It's all getting rather ugly over at Leigh at the moment with off-the-field matters unfortunately overshadowing their 36-28 win over Sheffield.

Last week Ryan Brierley activated a four-week release clause in his contract which resulted in a bitter war of words breaking out.

Brierley has refused to give any reasons why he wants to leave the Leigh and the club suspended the scrum-half claiming that he has been offered a deal by Championship rivals Bradford Bulls.

Brierley has strongly denied the claims while Bradford Bulls have said they would only look to explore the possibility of signing Brierley if the player exercised any such release clause in his contract and became a free agent.

Whatever happens, it looks like Brierley has played his last game for Centurions.

Penalty count

We don't like having a go at referees here - they are crucial for the game and already get abuse from all angles as it is. However, we do have to wonder if they have had a directive to clamp down on certain things though as there seem to be a lot more penalties for technical errors, especially around the ruck area.

These technical penalties certainly seem to be frustrating the players and what happens when you get frustrated players? Things boil over a bit and we get even more penalties. If there has been a directive then it is up to the coaches and the players to make sure they are on top of it all and stop having a go at the ref for following the laws of the game.

Wins at last

Highlights from the Super League match between Wakefield Wildcats and Catalans Dragons

Defending Super League champions Leeds got their first win of the season when they beat Huddersfield 20-16. Both sides have been desperately unlucky with injuries and the win sees the Rhinos move up to ninth in the table with just two points. The Giants are still looking for their first win of the season and are stuck on the bottom with four losses.

Catalans got their first away win but it was far from convincing from the Dragons against Wakefield. "It was a bit of a 'lazy' performance from the Dragons," said Brian Carney. "They are going to need to show a whole lot more to prove they have stomach to win games that aren't going their way."

Missing in action

Watch the tries as Leeds secured their first win of the season with a 20-16 victory over Huddersfield

Injuries are part and parcel of the game and at some stage during the season all clubs will feel the effects. Still, you have to feel for Huddersfield Giants whose ranks have been decimated by injury.

Currently they have eight front-line players in the treatment room and coach Paul Anderson will be praying that there is no more bad news this week as they prepare to face Hull KR. Giants fans will be hoping they are a different side when the likes of Craig Huby, Eorl Crabtree, Scott Grix and Jamie Ellis make their returns.

The one-pointer

Chris Sandow scored an incredible drop goal in the last second as Warrington came from 18 points down to steal victory at Salford

We had some close encounters this weekend - only the Widnes and Catalans games had more than a score in with the rest of the games going down to the wire. Warrington's fightback against Salford was incredible. Chris Sandow's drop-goal on the hooter to secure the win for the Wolves may have won all the headlines but Warrington's fightback started in the 59th minute and led to one heck of a finish.

Not to be outdone, Wigan's Matty Smith slotted two drop goals in their 26-25 win over Hull FC. Smith and Marc Sneyd exchanged drop-goals in the final minutes before Smith's second one scooped them the win. Stevo would have loved it! And talking about Stevo we wish him well in his recovery and hope to see him back on our screens soon.
