Great Britain have picked up another rowing gold at the Rio Olympics after a superb display from the men's eight on Saturday.

And there was also a silver for the women's eight, as Team GB enjoyed a wonderful morning at the Lagoa Stadium.

The men's team were expected to go close after impressing in qualifying and they led virtually all the way to comfortably hold off Germany, with the Netherlands taking bronze.

The eight got off to a very fast start but left plenty in the tank for the closing stages and crossed the line 1.33 seconds clear to secure a convincing victory in the final race of the Olympic regatta.

Scott Durant, Tom Ransley, Andrew T Hodge, Matt Gotrel, Pete Reed, Paul Bennett, Matt Langridge, William Satch and cox Phelan Hill were the winning team and it was Britain's first gold in the event since Sydney 2000.

Hill, who was part of the eight which claimed bronze at London 2012, told the BBC: "That was fantastic, absolutely fantastic. It was so different to four years ago.

"Today we controlled it from the start. Today was about delivery and these guys are absolute gladiators today."

Reed added: "I've never been so ready for an Olympic Games before. It's such a great bunch of guys and that was a big, big race."

Team GB finished the regatta with three gold medals in total, having secured a double on Friday.

And victory for the men's eight came just minutes after the women's eight had excelled, claiming a silver behind the USA in an event Great Britain had never previously medalled at.

The USA team dominate the scene and won gold at a third consecutive Olympics with a commanding display.

But the British team of Katie Greves, Melanie Wilson, Frances Houghton, Polly Swann, Jessica Eddie, Olivia Carnegie-Brown, Karen Bennett, Zoe Lee and cox Zoe de Toledo found themselves last in the early stages.

However, they had judged the pace perfectly and finished very strongly to narrowly edge out Romania for silver in a thrilling photo finish.
