Russia's 800m runner Yulia Stepanova has been granted permission by the IAAF to compete at the Rio Olympics as a neutral athlete.

The 29-year-old is the first member of Russia's track and field team to win eligibility after the country's athletes were banned from competing in Rio.

Stepanova was one of the world's top 800m runners before she and her husband Vitaly Stepanov, a drug-testing official, provided evidence to the World Anti-Doping Agency that doping was systematic in Russian track and field, with officials helping to cover it up.

After the ban was upheld last month, the IAAF confirmed athletes could apply for exemption if they could prove they have been the subject of reliable drug-testing outside Russia.

Individuals seeking to compete as a 'neutral athlete' have to get their evidence to the IAAF two weeks before the qualification deadline of the competition they want to enter - for Rio 2016 that is July 18.

A statement on Friday confirmed more than 80 athletes had applied for such an exemption and said Stepanova had succeeded because she had "made a truly exceptional contribution to the protection and promotion of clean athletes, fair play and the integrity and authenticity of the sport".
