Super Bowl 50: Denver Broncos 24-10 Carolina Panthers

By Scott Mason

Highlights of Super Bowl 50, between Cam Newton's Carolina Panthers and Peyton Manning's Denver Broncos.

As we count down to Super Bowl 51, Sky Sports looks back at what happened in last year's championship game.

An inspired Broncos defence dominated proceedings in Santa Clara and won Super Bowl 50 in convincing fashion to see out Peyton Manning's career on a fittingly victorious note.

'Marrone good fit for Jaguars'

Outside linebacker, Von Miller, was the talk of the NFL after his MVP-winning performance for the Broncos.

It was largely because of him that the Panthers never looked like challenging at the Levi's Stadium in February, despite the pre-game high hopes for the MVP from the regular season, quarterback Cam Newton.

Miller forced two turnovers that led to Denver's two touchdowns as Newton was sacked a total of six times and lost 64 yards over the course of the game.

The pre-game build-up had much to do with the outgoing Manning, who called time on a glittering 18-year career in March, but he struggled to make the kind of impact he did on his previous Super Bowl victory back in 2006 with the Indianapolis Colts.

The veteran quarterback saw out his time in the NFL by adding a second championship ring to his haul just weeks before his 40th birthday, but Super Bowl 50 belonged to MVP Miller.

The 27-year-old Texan was the standout force on the field with six tackles and two forced fumbles to his name.

He kept Cam Newton and his teammates at bay from start to finish and was, with a lot of help from his defensive teammates, responsible for the Broncos' first championship in the 21st century.

Asked about his counterpart, 'Super Cam', before the game, Miller said: "He's a great player, a super tough player to take down. He controls that whole offense, so if Cam goes, the whole offense goes.

"We can only stick to our game plan, playing the same type of defence we've been playing all year. If we can do that, we'll be alright."

He was correct. A professionally executed game plan tamed the Panthers with consummate ease as Newton's consistent in-season form was brought to an abrupt halt.

It was 'Super Cam' who took most of the post-game flak, but the whole Panthers outfit missed field goals and committed personal fouls that ultimately led to the two-touchdown defeat (one defensive and one offensive).

No Super Bowl winner had ever failed to score an offensive touchdown and, as the clock ticked down in the fourth quarter, it was looking like the Broncos were going to set the unwanted record.

Running back, C.J. Anderson, who underwent major knee surgery in October, took it home late, though, to secure the SB 50 victory for Denver - a victory that meant the Broncos won every game in which they scored a defensive touchdown last season.
