NFL Grades: Week Six: New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins the top performers

Image: New York Giants got their first win of the season in Denver against the Broncos

Week Six of the 2017 NFL season was another jam-packed one with upsets, incidents and controversy, but who came out the other side on top and who struggled?

There's top marks for NFC East rivals New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, as well as the Miami Dolphins following an upset win over the Falcons in Atlanta, while it's the clueless Cleveland Browns once again bringing up the rear.

Here's a look at our weekly team grades...

NFC EAST

New York Giants (W 23-10 @ Denver)

Highlights of the New York Giants’ trip to the Denver Broncos in week six of the NFL.

What the Giants did on Sunday night was astonishing. After losing Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall to season-ending injuries, and enduring a nightmare 0-5 start to the year, New York rolled into Denver and stomped the Broncos. The defence brought the heat - Jason Pierre-Paul had three sacks - and the run game shocked everyone. The Broncos had held Melvin Gordon, Ezekiel Elliott, LeSean McCoy and Marshawn Lynch to a combined 95 yards this season, but Orleans Darkwa had 117 on the ground on Sunday. Grade A+

Philadelphia Eagles (W 28-23 @ Carolina)

Across the league, how many teams look like real contenders after six weeks? The Eagles are one of them after a huge statement win on the road at Carolina. Cam Newton had back-to-back games with 300 yards and three touchdowns before Thursday, but Philadelphia then picked him off three times. Meanwhile, Carson Wentz had another big day with three scores and no interceptions. Grade A+

Cam Newton had an off night, throwing three intercepted passes as the Carolina Panthers lost 23-28 to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Washington Redskins (W 26-24 v San Francisco)

The Redskins held off a late 49ers rally to move to 3-2 and keep the pressure on Philadelphia. Chris Thompson once again stole the show on offense with 138 total yards, and Kirk Cousins (330 yards, two TDs) continued to show why Washington might have been wise to sign him to a long term deal. The team now heads to Philadelphia for a huge Monday Night Football match-up in Week Seven. Grade B

Dallas Cowboys (Bye)

NFC NORTH

Chicago Bears (W 27-24 @ Baltimore) (OT)

It was 'upset weekend', and the Bears delivered a shock win on the road at Baltimore. Rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky converted a clutch third down that led to the game-winning field goal, but running back Jordan Howard stole the show. He had a whopping 167 rushing yards, and his 36 rushing attempts were the seventh-most by any running back this past decade. John Fox has found a winning formula. Grade A-

Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen takes the toss and passes to tight end Zach Miller for the score.

Minnesota Vikings (W 23-10 v Green Bay)

The best way to describe Minnesota's performance on Sunday is that they "took care of business". After their biggest threat, Aaron Rodgers, left the game with broken collarbone, the Vikings shut down the Packers offense. They held runners Aaron Jones and Ty Montgomery to less than 45 yards each, and picked off back-up QB Brett Hundley three times. On offense, Jerick McKinnon had another explosive day with 99 total yards and two touchdowns. Grade B

Aaron Rodgers suffered a possible season-ending injury against the Minnesota Vikings

Detroit Lions (L 38-52 @ New Orleans)

This game was simply insane! A game with 90 points, five non-offensive touchdowns and eight turnovers! Ultimately, it was Matthew Stafford who cost his team the most, throwing three picks and losing three fumbles. The Lions can't protect the quarterback, and they can't - or refuse to - run the ball. Grade C-

A look back to how the world reacted to the more interesting moments from week six of the NFL including a Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson inspired 'People’s Elbow' celebration by Golden Tate.

Green Bay Packers (L 10-23 @ Minnesota)

The Rodgers-less Packers kept it close early, but ultimately the result mattered a lot less than the health of their star quarterback - and they've lost him, perhaps for the entire year. How will Green Bay cope moving forward? Grade D

Highlights of the Green Bay Packers' clash with the Minnesota Vikings in week six of the NFL.

NFC SOUTH

New Orleans Saints (W 52-38 v Detroit)

If you told me Drew Brees was going to be held to 186 yards and throw two interceptions, I'd say it would be impossible for the Saints to put up 50 points in a game. But they did, and in dramatic fashion. The most impressive part of this game for New Orleans was the swagger and confidence the defence played with, and they managed three scores including Cameron Jordan's game-sealing interception in the end zone. The Saints are hot! Grade A

Carolina Panthers (L 23-28 v Philadelphia)

Image: Cam Newton struggled for the Carolina Panthers against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night

After the Cam Newton MVP chatter was starting to build, he was flat during prime time on Thursday night. He only completed 53.8 percent of his passes, and had three throws picked off as the Panthers stumbled. It's not all Cam's fault - outside of his own 71 yards on the ground, the running game was stagnant. More worrying still, Luke Kuechly suffered another head injury. Grade C

Atlanta Falcons (L 17-20 v Miami)

There were shades of the Super Bowl as the Falcons blew a 17-0 half-time lead against the Dolphins. After looking firmly in control in the first half, the offense faltered and the defence couldn't slow down Jay Ajayi. The London-born runner had 130 yards on the ground, and Jay Cutler converted with two short touchdowns. With two straight losses and a date with New England next week, there is cause for concern in Atlanta. Grade D

Miami Dolphins Jay Ajayi's Masterclass, where the running back looks at how to make defenders miss.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (L 33-38 @ Arizona)

The Bucs were down 24-0 at half-time, and a whole lot of garbage time made this game look closer than it actually was. They were also down by that score line when Jameis Winston was forced out of the game with a shoulder injury, so there are no excuses in that regard. It was a dreadful performance, but Ryan Fitzpatrick earns them an E for effort after managing 27 points in the fourth quarter. Grade E

NFC WEST

Arizona Cardinals (W 38-33 v Tampa Bay)

Arizona Cardinals running back Adrian Peterson scores his first TD as a Cardinal on a 27-yard run

Adrian Peterson's arrival sparked something special in Arizona, and the veteran trio of Peterson, Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald all had outstanding individual outings. The statistics were phenomenal, as Palmer had over 300 yards and three touchdowns, while the RB-WR duo had over 270 yards and three TDs of their own. Watch out, NFC - the London-bound Cardinals are on a mission. Grade A

Los Angeles Rams (W 27-17 @ Jacksonville)

So far this season, the Jaguars have dominated the Texans, Ravens and Steelers. But they are proving to be the most unpredictable team in the league, and the Rams took advantage. Los Angeles are making sure they should be taken seriously, and bounced back from a tough loss to Seattle last week. They had two special teams touchdowns, and Jared Goff played a solid game without turning the ball over. This week's match-up against the Cards at Twickenham will be a huge test. Grade B+

We've picked out five of the best plays from week six so head on over to the NFL section of the website to vote for your favourite now!

San Francisco 49ers (L 24-26 @ Washington)

This was the fifth straight week that the 49ers lost by three points or fewer - an NFL record - and each defeat is as agonising as the last. This time, an offensive pass interference call on former Redskin Pierre Garcon cost them a chance at a game-winning kick, and despite rookie QB C.J. Beathard's best efforts, they fell just short. With tough games against the Cowboys, Eagles and Cardinals coming up, when will they get off the mark? Grade C

Seattle Seahawks (Bye)

AFC EAST

Miami Dolphins (W 20-17 @ Atlanta)

Wow! What an upset! Arguably, the biggest of a season chock full of them… Atlanta's offence is explosive, while Miami's has been utterly abysmal. Trailing 17-0 at the half, surely game over then? Not so. The Dolphins launched a sensational comeback on the strength of Ajayi's 130-yard day, while don't forget the job their defence did to shutout the Falcons in the second half. Grade A+

New England Patriots (W 27-17 @ New York Jets)

It's still far from Patriots vintage, but it was enough to get the job done. As you'd expect from any Bill Belichick coached side, the team showed a lot of character, if not always the most quality, in battling back from being down two scores early into the second quarter. Grade B+

Sport Illustrated's Pete King reflects on the main talking points from Week Six in the NFL.

New York Jets (L 17-24 v New England)

What an effort by the Jets! If anyone had any doubts around their 3-2 credentials prior to this divisional clash against the defending champ Patriots, then they were put to rest by this battling effort. New York actually were up 14-0 before a combination of New England's quality and a somewhat dodgy 'no TD' decision going against them was the difference. Grade B-

Buffalo Bills (Bye)

AFC NORTH

Pittsburgh Steelers (W 19-13 @ Kansas City)

Highlights of the week six clash between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs from the NFL.

Normal service resumed. After a Week Five aberration against the Jaguars - with Ben Roethlisberger throwing five interceptions - the Steelers got back on track against the team they love playing more than any other, Kansas City. The NFL's only unbeaten team ahead of the weekend slipped to a third straight defeat to Pittsburgh. Big Ben was better, though not back to his best, but you don't need to be when Le'Veon Bell runs for 179 yards and a score. Grade A

Baltimore Ravens (L 24-27 v Chicago) (OT)

Ugly on offence. In fact, both teams were particularly poor at the quarterback position in this tussle in Baltimore. BUT, crucially, Joe Flacco was just that little bit uglier! From 41 attempts, the Ravens QB only managed 180 yards and threw two killer interceptions, including a costly pick six. Grade E

Chicago Bears safety Adrian Amos returned this interception for a touchdown

Cleveland Browns (L 17-33 @ Houston)

Talking of poor quarterback play, we naturally come to Cleveland… It was Kevin Hogan's turn this weekend to put in a horror-showing at QB, with a three-interception strong effort against Houston, who were only too happy to show them what they could have won, rookie sensation Deshaun Watson, in this year's draft. Grade F

Cincinnati Bengals (Bye)

AFC SOUTH

Houston Texans (W 33-17 v Cleveland)

The Deshaun Watson train continues to chug along, and at some speed! The rookie QB made Cleveland rue the day they passed over him in the draft, putting up a three-TD strong display in a comprehensive home victory. Grade A

Tennessee Titans (W 36-22 v Indianapolis)

Highlights of the Indianapolis Colts' visit to the Tennessee Titans in weeks six of the NFL.

With Marcus Mariota back leading the offence, and Derrick Henry hammering away on the ground for 131 yards - including a 72-yard TD run - the Titans were able to come away with a win on Monday night, breaking an 11-game skid against the Colts, and earn a three-way tie for the lead in the AFC South. Grade A-

Jacksonville Jaguars (L 17-27 v Los Angeles Rams)

Image: Leonard Fournette has impressed hugely since being drafted in the first round by the Jacksonville Jaguars

The ever inconsistent Jags continue their trademark win one, lose one season. This was, however, an admittedly tricky test against the upstart Rams. Positives to take from defeat centre around the continued impressive play of rookie running back Leonard Fournette - 130 yards in this one and a touchdown for a sixth straight game to start his NFL career. Grade C

Indianapolis Colts (L 22-36 @ Tennessee)

Image: Jacoby Brisset has led the Indianapolis Colts well in Andrew Luck's absence

The Colts kept it close as long as they could in Tennessee, even leading 19-9 at one stage early in the third quarter, but were outscored 27-3 thereafter. QB Jacoby Brissett's performances continue to be solid in place of regular starter, but don't be fooled, Indianapolis will be only too happy to throw Andrew Luck in when ready to go. Grade C-

AFC WEST

Los Angeles Chargers (W 17-16 @ Oakland)

Image: Philip Rivers (L) and Melvin Gordon (R) both had strong games for the Los Angeles Chargers

Two in a row now for L.A! This one was even more meaningful perhaps than their Week Five win over the Giants, coming as it did against their divisional rivals. Philip Rivers was impressive, as always, in throwing for 268 yards and one touchdown, while Melvin Gordan tallied 150 total yards to go with one receiving and one rushing TD. Grade B+

Kansas City Chiefs (L 13-19 v Pittsburgh)

The Chiefs lose to the Steelers, again! But, as we all know, it is their only slip up of the season so far, so let's not be too scathing in our criticism just yet - they'll surely be hoping to avoid Pittsburgh come playoff time though. Grade B-

Oakland Raiders (L 16-17 v Los Angeles Chargers)

Image: Quarterback Derek Carr struggled on his return for the Oakland Raiders

The good news: Derek Carr returned. The bad news: it was hardly a dream return for the Raiders star quarterback. Carr threw for only 171 yards and two interception in a rusty display as his Oakland team slipped to a fourth straight defeat. A narrow one, but a defeat all the same, and one that delivers a further blow to their fading playoff hopes. Grade D

Denver Broncos (L 10-23 v New York Giants)

Well, that wasn't supposed to happen. The Broncos were seen as one of the locks of the weekend, unbeaten at home, against the still winless Giants. But as we know all too well, anything can happen on any given Sunday. What happened on this particular one was that Denver were overpowered on offence by a fired-up and ferocious Giants 'D'. Grade E
