A rare good week for the Chicago Bears who inflict Halloween horror on the Minnesota Vikings

There are some surprise names near the top of the class on Halloween weekend and a few teams who must bounce back from a horror show.

AFC EAST

New England Patriots (W 41-25 at Buffalo)

The Patriots look almost unstoppable on offence at the moment and Tom Brady appears to be extra inspired after his suspension. He threw another four touchdown passes on Sunday as the Patriots cruised through what could have been a tough divisional matchup. The only black mark? Some sloppy tackling on defence allowing 167 yards of Bills rushing. Grade A

New York Jets (W 31-28 at Cleveland)

Jets legend Joe Namath wanted Ryan Fitzpatrick pulled after his 3-for-15 start but the veteran quarterback stayed in the game and engineered a fine comeback from 20-7 down at half-time, while Matt Forte took his total to four touchdowns in two games after people had started to write him off. The big concern? Falling 20-7 down to a Josh McCown-led Browns team in the first place! Grade B

Buffalo Bills (L 25-41 v New England)

The 16-0 win in New England - no Tom Brady of course - is long forgotten now after a poor display of coverage saw the Patriots receivers and Rob Gronkowski run amok before they declared in the fourth quarter. The Bills will have to improve on this effort to reach the post-season although they at least know they have a decent No 2 back in Mike Gillislee. Grade D

Cincinnati Bengals (T 27-27 v Washington)

Highlights of the 3rd International Series match between the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals at Wembley

The Bengals will be happier than the Redskins to have come away from Wembley with a tie as they saw their defence ripped to shreds for much of the game, and Andy Dalton's late fumble didn't prove as costly as it could have. Grade B-

Cleveland Browns (L 28-31 v New York Jets)

Oh Cleveland! Cruising to victory at half-time with Josh McCown looking composed and Terrelle Pryor impossible to stop, and then the second half happened. McCown reverted to type, the defence went to pieces and that all adds up to an eighth loss and one more week closer to the No 1 pick. Grade D

Pittsburgh Steelers - bye

AFC SOUTH

Tennessee Titans (W 36-22 v Jacksonville)

Highlights of the Jacksonville Jaguars clash with the Tennessee Titans in Week 8 of the NFL

Barring a couple of garbage time Jaguars touchdowns, the Titans put up an excellent all-round performance with Marcus Mariota, DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry all impressing. Mariota only failed on four of his 22 pass attempts and appears to have overcome his early-season woes. Grade A

Houston Texans (W 20-13 v Detroit)

The Texans were nowhere near their best on offence in this game, not even passing 300 total yards, but they got a win to take into their bye week when they can hopefully get running back Lamar Miller back to 100 per cent. He scored against the Lions but looked off the pace and needs to get back in top shape if they are to hold off the improving Titans. Grade - B

Indianapolis Colts (L 14-30 v Kansas City)

You know it has been a bad day when quarterback Andrew Luck is your leading passer and runner as well. And Luck's passing performance, not for the first time this season, was not a particularly good one. He was under constant pressure and sacked on six occasions, three-and-a-half of those going to a dominant Dee Ford. The Colts are shaping up as a major disappointment in a winnable division. Grade E-

A collection of fails, funnies and odd moments from week eight of NFL

Jacksonville Jaguars (L 22-36 at Tennessee)

Just awful from the Jags, who had their only successes late in the game when a comeback was already well beyond them. Blake Bortles' box score looks good, and played well for fantasy GMs, but he looked ill at ease for most of the game and they were forced to abandon their run game after falling behind early thanks to some of the shoddiest defence played all season. Grade F

AFC WEST

Kansas City Chiefs (W 30-14 at Indianapolis)

A high-quality road win for the Chiefs but it might have come at a big cost. Nick Foles impressed in relief of injured quarterback Alex Smith and Kansas City also lost up-and-coming runner Spencer Ware to injury as well. The back-ups performed well but can they repeat that if asked to in the coming weeks in what is shaping up as the NFL's toughest division? Grade A

Oakland Raiders (W 30-24 at Tampa Bay)

Highlights of the Oakland Raiders overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8 of the NFL

Such a weird game in Tampa, where the home side was outgained by more than 350 yards on offence but still had chances to win the game in regulation play and overtime. The Raiders were outstanding but failed to make the most of their chances because of a record-breaking day of penalties - 23 for 200 yards. Derek Carr threw for 513 yards and four scores in an A+++ performance but - message to Raiders players - stop being such naughty boys! Grade A

Denver Broncos (W 27-19 v San Diego)

Every week it's the same. Defence wins game for the Broncos. Another pick six, this time by Bradley Roby, two further key interceptions of Philip Rivers and constant pressure leading to four sacks. The offence was inconsistent yet again, with Trevor Siemian and Devontae Booker having fumbling issues, but they continue to win and that's what the game is all about. Grade A-

San Diego Chargers (L 19-27 at Denver)

Mistakes proved costly for the Chargers, who are a better team than their 3-5 record would suggest. A Philip Rivers pick six gave the Broncos defence the spark they needed in the second quarter, and he would face immense pressure from that point on. Still there was another 100-yard rushing performance from Melvin Gordon. Grade C

NFC EAST

Dallas Cowboys (W 29-23 v Philadelphia)

Highlights of the Dallas Cowboys' win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8 of the NFL

Six wins on the trot now for America's (and Dak's) team. Although it took them until overtime, this was a vital victory against a very good defensive opponent and a key divisional rival. Dak Prescott wasn't at his best and Ezekiel Elliott failed to break 100 yards rushing, but Dez Bryant's return boosted their offence and they played very well on defence. Grade A

Washington Redskins (T 27-27 v Cincinnati)

A superb game at Wembley Stadium, decided by a dreadful field goal attempt by Dustin Hopkins, who did his best Gareth Southgate (Euro 96 version) impression at the home of England's football team. The Redskins totalled a superb 546 yards of net offence but still only came away with a tie. Grade B

Philadelphia Eagles (L 23-29 at Dallas)

Disappointment for the Eagles, who managed to give up a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and then lose in overtime. Their defence just couldn't step up in the closing 20 minutes of the game and Carson Wentz's short passing game might just have been a little too conservative when there were chances to put the game beyond a red-hot Dallas team. New York Giants - bye

NFC NORTH

Chicago Bears (w 20-10 v Minnesota)

Highlights of the Chicago Bears 20-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in week eight of the NFL. Video from NFL.com

It pleases me to be able to write some positive words about the Bears, who stifled Minnesota's dink and dunk offence in a Halloween performance to remember. Jordan Howard bounced back with more than 200 yards and Jay Cutler returned with a composed display. Possibly their best all-round performance in three years, now they need to follow it up. Grade A+

Green Bay Packers (L 32-33 at Atlanta)

Four touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers but with little in the way of running game, apart from what he provided himself, the Packers came up short against one of the league's better teams. They are still well in the hunt for the division and the play-offs but might want to add a decent running back before the deadline if there is one available. Grade C+

Detroit Lions (L 13-20 at Houston)

A disappointing display from the Lions, who couldn't get their offence going in a game that offered little in the way of excitement. Theo Riddick returned from injury with 133 all-purpose yards and a touchdown but that was all the Lions had to celebrate as their three-game win streak came to an end. Grade C-

Minnesota Vikings (L 10-20 at Chicago)

A second successive concerning display from the Vikings, who were a mess on defence - something of a shock - and continue to struggle with their patched-up offensive line. No running game and only two decent drives in the game. Injuries are beginning to bite now after a 5-0 start when their Defence continually stepped up. Grade F

NFC SOUTH

New Orleans Saints (W 25-20 v Seattle)

Highlights of the Dallas Cowboys' win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8 of the NFL

A good win for the Saints in a strange game that saw Mark Ingram benched for an early fumble which led to a Seattle touchdown. Barring that play and a trick effort which saw converted wide receiver Tanner McEvoy throw a touchdown pass, the maligned Saints defence played much better and Drew Brees and Tim Hightower did enough on offence to secure victory. Grade A-

Carolina Panthers (W 30-20 v Arizona)

The Panthers stormed into a 24-0 lead on two short Jonathan Stewart touchdowns but they were up against it for most of the rest of the game and struggled for much of the second half, when their offence was anaemic at best. A win, and a win over a good opponent, but still lots to improve on for head coach Ron Rivera. Grade B

Atlanta Falcons (W 33-32 v Green Bay)

It wasn't their best offensive performance of the season but the Falcons did just enough to end their two-game skid in their fourth successive game decided by one score. Matt Ryan threw three more touchdown passes to rescue the Falcons on a day when Devonta Freeman was less effective than usual. Grade B+

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (L 24-30 v Oakland)

Tough to fathom how the Bucs managed to almost win this game or even send it to overtime when they were outgained 626-270 in net yardage. Jameis Winston was inconsistent, he failed to get Jacquizz Rodgers going on the ground and couldn't get Mike Evans as involved. Oakland's penalties kept this one close. Grade C-

NFC WEST

Seattle Seahawks (L 20-25 at New Orleans)

The Seahawks lacked spark in the Superdome, with Russell Wilson failing to throw a touchdown pass and their second-half display would only see them score six points on two Steven Hauschka field goals. They still lead the division but much improvement is required. Grade C-

Arizona Cardinals (L 20-30 at Carolina)

Not really sure why the Cardinals only decided to turn up late in the second quarter of this game, but they impressed after that simply awful start despite running back David Johnson only rushing for 24 yards. But we can't just ignore them falling 24 points down to a Panthers team almost devoid of confidence coming into the game. Grade C-
