The New York Giants have cut veteran cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Rodgers-Cromartie appeared in 61 games with 44 starts over four seasons after signing with the Giants as a free agent in 2014.

He had reportedly been asked by the Giants to take a "significant pay cut" from his $6.5m salary for the 2018 season and also to move to safety and was unwilling to do either.

He will instead be able to sign with a team of his choosing.

Rodgers-Cromartie joins a free agent cornerback class that also includes Trumaine Johnson, Malcolm Butler, Morris Claiborne, Bashaud Breeland, Prince Amukamara, E.J. Gaines and Patrick Robinson.

The 31-year-old Rodgers-Cromartie, who was the 16th overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2008 NFL Draft, was named to the Pro Bowl for the Giants in 2015. He followed up with six interceptions in 2016 and earned second-team All-Pro honours.
