The Tennessee Titans have informed running back DeMarco Murray he will be released after two years with the franchise.
Murray rushed for 659 yards and six touchdowns last season but found himself losing playing time to second-season team-mate Derrick Henry as the campaign wore on.
Henry ended up leading the Titans with 774 yards and five touchdowns on 176 carries and performed well in their post-season win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Murray missed the Titans' regular season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a knee injury, and didn't suit up in their play-off games against the Chiefs and New England Patriots.
The decision to release Murray means Tennessee will save $6.5m against next season's salary cap ahead of free agency opening up next week.
"I want to thank DeMarco for his contributions as a Titan, not only for what he did on the field but also in the locker room and in the community," Titans general manager Jon Robinson said in a statement.
"He was a pro in every facet and we wish him and his family the best moving forward."
