Highlights of the Detroit Lions' clash with the New York Giants in week 15 of the NFL.

The New York Giants consolidated their NFC play-off position as another solid defensive display led them to a 17-6 victory over Detroit in a hard-fought battle at the MetLife Stadium.

Eli Manning capped a superb opening drive with a six-yard score to Sterling Shepard, and a trademark one-handed catch and score from Odell Beckham Jnr on a clutch third-and-one in the fourth quarter gave the Giants a commanding 13-point lead.

Matthew Stafford, wearing a protective glove on his throwing hand after he dislocated his middle finger last week, rarely threatened to unlock the masterful New York secondary, and he was picked off by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the end zone on the two-minute warning to end hopes of another Lions comeback.

The win took the Giants to 10-4, with the Lions slipping to 9-5 and in danger of missing out on the play-offs after their five-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt.

Manning engineered a 75-yard opening drive over 10 plays which he completed in style with a floated pass to impressive rookie Shepard, but the Lions defence stepped up over the remainder of the half and forced punter Brad Wing into a busy afternoon.

But Stafford also found the going tough, although he did well to set up a great opportunity for a first-quarter score until Zach Zenner fumbled just a couple of yards short of the goal-line following a big hit from Leon Hall.

Matt Prater got Detroit on the board with a 48-yard field-goal in the second quarter, but that score was soon cancelled out as long-time Chicago favourite Robbie Gould split the uprights from 47 yards to cap an 11-play drive featuring a number of clutch third-down conversions.

Stafford and the Lions took 12 plays to move just 45 yards in a scrappy third quarter, but the visitors could not take full advantage as the well-drilled Giants defence limited the damage to a 33-yard field-goal from Prater.

Wing and Sam Martin continued to trade punts early in the fourth period, but Manning stopped the rot with his best drive of the game, completing superb passes of 25 yards to Beckham Jnr and 23 yards to Shepard on the next play.

The drive hit the buffers on Detroit's four-yard line, but Manning threw wide to Beckham Jnr on third down and one and the star receiver pulled the ball in with his outstretched left hand and managed to get full control before sneaking it inside the pylon.

Stafford has masterminded a number of fourth-quarter comebacks throughout the season, but he ran out of time - and receivers - before being intercepted by Rodgers-Cromartie with Anquan Boldin out of range.
