Former NFL running back Joe McKnight has been shot dead in an apparent road-rage incident in Louisiana.

McKnight spent three seasons with the New York Jets, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2010 draft, before being released in 2013 and played twice for the Kansas City Chiefs the year after.

More recently the 28-year-old had been playing in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The incident happened in Terrytown, a suburb of New Orleans, on Thursday afternoon with Sheriff Newell Normand saying McKnight was shot after a verbal exchange following a traffic incident.

A 54-year-old man was taken into custody, after waiting at the scene, and was due to be questioned.

McKnight is the second NFL player this year to die as a result of a possible road-rage incident in the state.

Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was killed in April in an incident that also saw his wife wounded.
