Quarterback Mark Sanchez has signed for the Dallas Cowboys just moments after his release from the Denver Broncos was confirmed.

Sanchez was cut by the Broncos after they failed to find a trade partner for him, having only traded a conditional pick to the Philadelphia Eagles to sign him back in March.

He failed to beat out Trevor Siemian in the competition to take over from Peyton Manning as the Broncos' starting quarterback, with the franchise trying to trade him instead.

A deal with the Minnesota Vikings seemed most likely but they instead made a deal with the Eagles to sign Sam Bradford instead.

Sanchez was let loose just before the 4pm ET (9pm BST) roster deadline but shortly after that time passed, the Cowboys revealed they had signed the 29-year-old.

Dallas seem likely to go with rookie Dak Prescott at quarterback when they open their season at home to the New York Giants next Sunday, but Sanchez gives them a veteran presence in a backup role.
