The Oakland Raiders are trading star kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson to the New England Patriots.

A person familiar with the deal said Sunday the deal will become official after Patterson passes a physical.

NFL Network reported Oakland will receive a fifth-round pick in the deal and send one of its six sixth-round picks to New England.

Patterson is one of the most accomplished kickoff returners in the game. His career average of 30.2 yards per return ranks second all-time to Hall of Famer Gale Sayers' 30.6 mark.

Patterson, who turned 27 on Saturday, signed a two-year, $8.5m deal with Oakland last spring as a free agent after notching his second Pro Bowl appearance as a returner.

He caught 31 passes for 309 yards in his first year with the Raiders while adding 13 carries for 121 yards and two scores on the ground.

A former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, Patterson's best season was his rookie campaign in 2013, when he tallied 627 scrimmage yards and seven touchdowns, in addition to leading the league in kick-return average (32.4) and kick-return TDs (two).
