Game-changer

Early on in the third quarter, the Patriots had already stretched their half-time lead of 17-9 by a further 10 points, so the Steelers were in desperate need of a swift scoring drive... Instead, wide receiver Eli Rogers fumbled on the very first play of their ensuing drive, gifting the Pats great field position from which they'd score another touchdown to kill the contest.

Stat of the night

22 - touchdowns thrown by Brady now - with no interceptions - over his last seven meetings with the Steelers, including an incredible flea-flicker strike to Chris Hogan - who had 180 yards receiving, and two TDs - in the game.

The game

The signs were there early in the contest as the Patriots scored a field goal on their opening possession, and then Hogan hauled in his first touchdown of the night, while the Steelers went scoreless in the first quarter.

The visitors did eventually put some points on the board when running back DeAngelo Williams - in for the injured Le'Veon Bell - ran in for a five-yard score.

But that was about as good as things got for the Steelers - Brady found Hogan again on an incredible flea-flicker touchdown to stretch the Patriots' lead, before Pittsburgh were then denied a second score of their own.

Ben Roethlisberger - 314 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT - was throwing the ball nicely, completing 13 straight, and thought he'd found Jesse James for a touchdown, but the tight end was ruled to have been tackled short of the endzone.

The Steelers would instead have to settle for a field goal just before half-time, and the Patriots swiftly scored one of their own soon after the break to regain their 11-point advantage.

LeGarrette Blount ran in from a yard out to stretch that further, before Rogers' fumble, and Brady's third touchdown of the night, to Julian Edelman - 118 yards off eight receptions - all but ended the game.

Desperately seeking quick points, Roethlisberger was intercepted in the final quarter, though he did pick up a consolation 30-yard touchdown to Cobi Hamilton late one.

But it's the Patriots who triumphed, and who now head to Houston in search of a fifth Super Bowl championship,
