One of the world's best netballers will be playing in the Vitality Superleague next season after Serena Guthrie confirmed she will be leaving Australian side Giants

The mid courter, a key part of England's gold medal-winning squad at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, announced her intention to return to the UK after an extended spell in Australia and New Zealand.

The news comes just a couple of days after Roses team-mate Helen Housby committed to a three-year deal with NSW Swifts, so Guthrie's return is a coup for the British game - although she has yet to reveal who she will be joining.

Guthrie has been one of England's best exports, excelling in New Zealand with the Northern Mystics and most recently a hugely successful two-year spell with Giants in the Australian Super Netball.

Guthrie and the Giants were beaten in the Grand Final last year and face a pivotal Preliminary Final this weekend to determine whether they will return to the league's showpiece

However with a big year on the horizon for England she is returning to the UK.

"I think for me, going home in 2019 is something that's always kind of been in my head a little bit, even as a younger player," she said

"It's part of my life plan and achieving the things I want to try and do in life and the other boxes I want to tick as a person.

"It is just something that kind of feels right for me as a person, as a whole. It's a big decision to make and a very tough one and one that I've gone back and forth on over the last couple of months, but all in all it feels right."

England host the World Cup in July next year and the Roses, currently the no 2 ranked team in the world have never won the competition, but Tracey Neville's team will fancy their chances on home soil.

Guthrie wants to take advantage by being based in the UK and after announcing her decision the battle will now be on to see which team can secure her services for 2019.

The 28-year-old made her name with Team Bath, and the five-time champions may well be among the teams chasing her, but Guthrie's quality is such that all 10 Superleague teams would benefit from her skills and experience.
