James Harden joined Oscar Robertson in the NBA record books with another sensational display in a 108-104 win for the Houston Rockets over the New Orleans Pelicans.
Harden posted 41 points and six assists in Saturday night's game, becoming only the second player to post more than 35 points and five helpers in seven straight games - he also pulled down nine rebounds.
Robertson managed that feat twice in 1965 and 1967.
"That's what I play for," Harden said when asked about being compared to 12-time All-Star and Hall of Famer Robertson.
"That's what you play the game of basketball for, to be mentioned in the name with the greats.
"Obviously, I have a long way to go, but that's what I put my jersey on for, that's what I lace my shoes up for, to go out there and be the best that I can be and when it's all said and done, be mentioned as one of the best basketball players to ever touch a basketball."
Despite Harden's scoring heroics the Rockets still had to hold on for victory, almost throwing away a 15-point lead they held with six minutes remaining.
New Orleans, led by Julius Randle and Anthony Davis, went on a 13-2 run to close almost within a shot, but P.J. Tucker made two free throws with 12 seconds remaining and the Rockets (20-15) made it four wins on the bounce.
Davis was unable to follow up his 48-point outburst against Dallas and, for a change, did not even lead the Pelicans in scoring as Randle hit 10 of his 19 shots in a 23-point performance.
Harden's chief support came from Eric Gordon who scored 21 points, while Danuel House Jr made the most of 32 minutes on court to score 15, including three three-pointers.
