Jason Kenny led a young Great Britain team to a silver medal in the team sprint on the opening day of the Track Cycling World Championships in the Netherlands.

Kenny was joined by Jack Carlin and Ryan Owens, and they performed well to reach the final before being beaten by a strong home trio in Apeldoorn.

The 29-year-old, coming back from a break, had to try and chase down Johnny Hoogland on the final lap but the task proved beyond him.

Kenny rotated in with another young rider Joe Truman, while the team was completed by the experience of Philip Hindes.

"Obviously when you lose a final it leaves a sour taste but I'm well happy with that," Kenny said.

"A month ago I wasn't sure I'd even be in the team to travel. And even when I did make it I wasn't sure I'd make the [final trio]. Joe [Truman] has been going really well to be fair. So the fact I got the nod and we stuck it on the podium as well… I'm dead chuffed."

Great Britain could have two more medals by the end of Thursday, with both team pursuit line-ups back in action.
