Britain's Adam Yates says he will continue to focus on the general classification at the Tour de France after matching the race favourites and retaining second place overall on stage nine.
The 23-year-old Orica-BikeExchange rider started the Tour with the primary goal of winning a stage out of a breakaway and had planned to deliberately lose time on certain days in order to save energy for others.
However, having finished alongside race leader Chris Froome and Nairo Quintana following a fierce battle on stage nine's final climb, Yates lies just 16 seconds off the yellow jersey and is now keen to keep his overall challenge going.
Yates said: "I'm very happy. I reach the rest day in a good position. I just need to recover well.
"I would like to win a stage, but as long as I have options on GC [general classification], I'll follow that goal."
Yates finished just ahead of Froome on stage nine following a relentless battle between the contenders for victory on the climb to a hail and rain-soaked summit finish at Andorre Arcalis.
He added: "Yesterday I felt better, but I didn't lose anything to Froome, so I'm very satisfied.
"I had no problem with the rain at the end. I actually prefer the rain than racing in 35-degree heat and not being able to breathe."
The Tour now pauses for its first rest day on Monday, but the race resumes on Tuesday with a 197km 10th stage from Escaldes Engordany to Revel. Find out more about the route in our race guide and follow the stage live with our live blog from 1pm BST.
