Lizzie Armitstead continued her fine start to the 2016 season by repeating last year's victory in the Trofeo Alfredo Binda in Italy.

The world road race champion timed her challenge to perfection, attacking near the end of the one day race to come home more a second clear of runner-up Megan Guarnier, one of her Boels-Dolman team-mates.

Armitstead has only raced four times this season, winning the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in the Netherlands last month before taking the Strade Bianche in Italy earlier this month.

She tried to make it a hat-trick in the Ronde van Drenthe last weekend but was forced out of the race some way before the finish because of illness.

American Guarnier was no match for a rejuvenated Armitstead's sprint finish but she was able to hold on for second ahead of the fast-finishing Jolanda Neff, who claimed third place for Servetto Footon.
