Britain’s Owain Doull produced an excellent performance to finish fifth in the men’s under-23 individual time trial on the second day of the UCI Road World Championships in the United States
Fresh from claiming third place overall at the Tour of Britain earlier this month, the 22-year-old Welshman stopped the clock on a 30km course in Richmond in 37min 46sec, which was 36 seconds down on winner Mads Wurtz Schmidt, of Denmark.
German pair Maximilian Schachmann and Lennard Kamna took silver and bronze by finishing 12 and 21 seconds back respectively.
Doull is a track rider by trade but races on the road for Sir Bradley Wiggins' new team, WIGGINS, as they prepare for the team pursuit at next year's OIympic Games in Rio.
Doull told Sky Sports: "I'm pretty pleased. I didn't do a great deal of preparation going into it because I was concentrating on the Tour of Britain and the world road race on Friday. I was hoping for maybe a top 10, so to get a top five, I'm pretty happy with that.
"I have never done a major European or world under-23 time trial championship before, so I was going into the unknown a bit and didn't know where I would stand. It bodes well for the future."
Ireland's Ryan Mullen, who was runner-up by less than one second in last year's under-23 world time trial, could only cross the line 11th fastest this time around, 49 seconds down, after he and the other late starters had their rides hampered by rain.
Schmidt, 21, who was also junior world time-trial champion in 2011, said: "It was nicely done. It is always special to be world champion and, in the under-23 class, I can't be more excited. I'm so happy."
Earlier in the day, the United States' Chloe Dygert dominated the junior women's individual time trial, beating compatriot Emma White into second place by 1min 5sec and Australia's Anna-leeza Hull into third by 1min 26sec.
