Jordan Spieth leads Masters by five after setting 36-hole record

Jordan Spieth shot a 66 on day two at Augusta to make Masters history and set a new 36-hole scoring record, finishing the day on -14

Jordan Spieth will take a five-shot lead into the last 36 holes of the Masters at Augusta after breaking a 39-year-old scoring record on Friday.

Spieth carded a second-round 66 to make it to 14 under at the halfway stage of the tournament, bettering the record set by Raymond Floyd back in 1976.

The 21-year-old had six birdies and one of his few mistakes came at the last hole, when he missed an eight-foot putt that would have meant the new record being 15 under.

Spieth opened the day with a birdie at the par-five second and he picked up further shots at the fifth and eighth to extend his advantage.

Hopes he would come back to the field over the back nine also failed to materialise as he added three more birdies, making the most of the par five 13th and 15th.

For a while, it looked as if Charley Hoffman would eat into Spieth's lead, and he moved ominously to 10 under when he made a third successive birdie at the 14th.

But he failed to take advantage of the clear birdie opportunity the 15th brings, and he went on to make a sloppy bogey at the closing hole when a poor drive led to his only dropped shot of the round and a 10-under finish.

The later starters failed to make it past Hoffman, although Dustin Johnson and Englishmen Justin Rose and Paul Casey put themselves in handy positions for a weekend charge.

Rose rebounded from two early bogeys to post a two under 70, while Casey managed to match Spieth by avoiding any dropped shots in his four under 68.

However, most of the late fireworks came from Johnson, who had a typical rollercoaster round that started off with a double bogey at the first to drop him back to level par.

But the recent WGC-Cadillac Championship winner bounced back with an eagle at the second and he would go on to make two more, at the par five eighth and 15th holes. However, a dropped shot at the last meant a round of 67 and a tie for third place at halfway.

Phil Mickelson, out with Rory McIlroy in the penultimate group, also made a back-nine charge to reach six under at halfway, four birdies coming home helping him to a 68.

Ernie Els sits in a tie for seventh place after a round of 72 and there was a fantastic second round from 58-year-old Mark O'Meara, who turned back the clock to post 68 and finish on three-under.

There were also positives for Tiger Woods, who overcame his short game troubles and carded a second-round 69 to make the cut for the first time this season.

But McIlroy will need something special to complete his own personal grand slam after a sloppy one-under 71.

The world No 1 was in serious danger of missing the cut halfway through his second round when he double bogeyed the ninth to drop to three over.

McIlroy was able to make up for his earlier mistake with a sensational approach to the 13th that left him a tap-in for eagle, and he then chipped in for birdie at the 17th and picked up another stroke at the last to join the Woods group on two under, 14 shots off record-breaking Spieth.
