Butch Harmon has hailed the performance of Vijay Singh after the veteran produced a vintage display during the second round of the Players Championship.

The 54-year-old posted a four-under 68 as one of the afternoon starters at TPC Sawgrass, mixing five birdies with a sole blemish during an impressive round.

Singh heads into the weekend just three strokes adrift of midway pacesetters Louis Oosthuizen and Kyle Stanley, with Harmon surprised by the veteran's start to golf's unofficial "fifth major".

"What Vijay Singh has done this week has been very impressive," Harmon told Sky Sports. "He really hasn't played a lot of golf on the PGA Tour and doesn't play much on the Champions Tour, but is six under for the week.

"There are a lot of great players nobody near his total and long past that, so I think it's unbelievable what he has achieved so far.

"He has probably hit more balls than three regular guys combined on the PGA Tour, and at 54-years-old is still grinding away and is unbelievably competitive. I for one think it's fantastic to see what he has done.

"I think there may be some low scores tomorrow morning, where the guys out early who have just made the cut have nothing to lose.

"Those early starters can free-wheel, whereas the later starters are going to have some problems. Bad weather is expected and thunderstorms are forecast, so it will be interesting to see what happens."
