Masters contenders: Dustin Johnson

It's been feast or famine since Dustin Johnson returned from his six-month absence, with a win, two further top fives and a couple of missed cuts.

One thing we do know is that this 30-year-old, who is now settled off the course with a young family, is a proven winner of all but the very best events in golf. He can beat any field - he's seen off the very best already this season at Doral - and can win when conditions are tough as well as when they're easy.

So far, majors have proven one step beyond, but surely that will change at some stage. Already, DJ has surrendered a big lead with 18 holes left of the US Open, been within one of the lead with half a dozen holes left in the Open Championship and, famously, fallen foul of a ruling which cost him a place in a play-off for the PGA Championship.

Key facts

World ranking: 7
Masters form: 30-38-38-13-MC
2015 starts: MC-4-2-MC-1-6

The Masters is missing from this list, and five visits yielding zero top-10 finishes would be a concern for some. That said, he did hit the front after 14 holes of round two in 2013 only to make a mess of the par-five 15th, and there can be little doubt that over 18 holes he's got it in him to shoot the lights out here at Augusta.

Can he string four such rounds together and is he strong enough to get over the line should he stand on the 18th tee with the opportunity to do so? Those are not easy questions to answer, but Johnson is among the biggest hitters in the world and among the most prolific winners, too, so we shouldn't rush to rule him out.
