Bubba Watson: Poor putting put paid to my Masters defence

Bubba Watson has put the blame firmly on his putting for his poor showing at this week’s US Masters at Augusta National.

The 36-year-old defending champion accepts that his chances of winning a third Green Jacket are over for this year, after posting a third round 73 on Saturday.

After 54 holes the American stands at one-under-par, following a topsy-turvy round that produced just five pars.

Despite making seven birdies, he also had five bogeys after starting with a triple-bogey seven at the first.

With just 18 holes remaining, the 2012 and 2014 champion trails leader Jordan Spieth by 15 shots, in a tie for 25th, and admits this year’s challenge has ended.

After struggling on the greens, Watson said: "You know you're hitting the ball good, it's just about making the putts.

"Look at every champion at every tournament that's ever been played, no matter if it's the Masters or not, they putt well. I've missed my share of putts. I had five three-putts today.

"I'm out of it. But I still have two Green Jackets, so I'll be able to sleep OK tonight."
