Mcilroy will head in to Sunday's final round 3 shots off the lead after a superb 65 on day 3 of The Masters

Rory McIlroy is looking forward to going head to head with Patrick Reed in the final round of the Masters at Augusta National.

American Reed, seeking his maiden major victory, has a three-shot advantage over McIlroy after 54 holes after retaining the outright lead with a five-under 67 to move to 14-under 202.

The pair will go out in the final two-ball on Sunday, reviving memories of their famous duel in the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine when Reed prevailed one-up after 18 thrilling holes.

McIlroy may be three behind after carding a brilliant seven-under 65 on Saturday, but he has his own memories of how tough it can be to take a lead into the final round of the Masters after his meltdown in 2011.

The Northern Irishman led by four shots after three rounds seven years ago, only to shoot an 80 as he slumped out of contention, and he says he has benefitted from that experience.

"I'm looking forward to it," McIlroy told Sky Sports. "Obviously we started on the first tee all square at that Ryder Cup and he's a few shots ahead of me, but I know what it's like to be in that position.

"It isn't easy, especially if it's your first time. So I'm going to go out there and try and freewheel it and play as if I've nothing to lose and all to gain, which I do.

"He's obviously playing very well and if he continues to play like that I'll need another round like today to have a chance."

McIlroy produces a superb chip-in for eagle on the eighth

McIlroy has finished in the top 10 in his last four Masters, but he "100 per cent" feels like he is playing better than ever before.

He added: "I've always said that the final round in 2011 was a huge turning point in my career. It was the round that got me ready to win major championships.

McIlroy's tee shot on the sixth was close to a hole-in-one

"I wasn't ready at that point and looking back on it I reflected a lot and I learned a lot from it.

"This is my next opportunity to be in a final group again at the Masters and put all those wrongs right. I feel like I learnt a lot from it and I come in a much better player, a much more mature player, and I feel that will be a huge help for me."

McIlroy will become only the sixth man to complete the career Grand Slam if he does triumph on Sunday, but he is not thinking about that achievement.

"I need to go out there and play a good round of golf, that's it," he said.

"I've kept it out of my mind all week so far and this is just another great opportunity to play what I think is the best golf course in the world. Just go out to enjoy it and I'm just really excited."

McIlroy's flawless 65 in the third round equalled his lowest round at Augusta National and contained a number of highlights, with three birdies in four holes from the third, including one at the sixth where he went close to a hole-in-one.

He then chipped in for an eagle at the eighth before adding birdies at the 15th and 18th on the back nine to finish on 11 under.

"It was really special," he said. "I went off today a little tight. Even though I was quite a few behind I knew I needed a good round to get myself in with a chance going into tomorrow and it was a little bit of a cagey start with the two pars on one and two.

"But after that the birdie on three really settled me down and I sort of got rolling after that.

"I rode my luck a little bit out there at times, I got a couple of fortunate breaks, but I think to win a golf tournament like this you need to have luck on your side sometimes and it was definitely with me today."
