Rory McIlroy has been grouped with rising star Jon Rahm for the opening two rounds of the 81st Masters.

The 27-year-old's latest bid to complete the career grand slam begins at 6:41pm (BST) on Thursday, and they are out three hours earlier for the second round.

"I've played with a few of the Asian contenders, so I sort of expected one of those guys," said McIlroy. "And then Jon Rahm, I haven't played with him competitively. We played 18 holes, a practice round, in Austin, and I'm really impressed with his game.

"He's a great young player, and he'll be a huge asset to our European Ryder Cup team in years to come. I'm looking forward to it."

Masters tradition dictates that the defending champion plays with the US Amateur champion, so young Australian Curtis Luck has the honour of being out with Danny Willett while Matt Kuchar makes up the threeball.

Jordan Spieth, whose infamous meltdown at the 12th was the key moment of the 2016 Masters, heads out in group No 14 with European Ryder Cup team-mates Martin Kaymer and Matt Fitzpatrick, who closed with a final-round 67 last year to earn a top-10 finish and guarantee an invite for this week.
