Kirsty Gallacher believes Niall Horan's passion for golf is great for the game

Kirsty Gallacher reflects on her interview with One Direction star Niall Horan at the Masters, and she believes he can help attract a vast number of youngsters to take an interest in the sport.

Niall Horan is a great guy, and he is so passionate about golf. He has clearly got the bug for golf and that comes across whenever you listen to him. He's really excited to be here at Augusta, and it's so nice to see that in a young guy with his profile.

The fact that someone like Niall is a keen golfer is inspiring for a younger generation to take an interest in the game. He can tap into that market and persuade his fans that it's a cool sport and you can have fun on the course.

Too many kids see golf as an old man's game, but Niall's impact can help change their minds. He has millions of fans all round the world, and if he can attract them to golf, the future for the sport would be incredibly bright.

And Niall is clearly a good player, his handicap is down to 12, so he obviously works hard on his game and plays as much as he can.

He's completely aware of the impact he can have on the game, particularly in the UK and Ireland. He's set up a golf management business, and I'll soon be hosting a charity event at the end of May which features Niall and Justin Rose.

It's interesting that he is fully focused on golf. When I asked him why he loved the game, he said it was a great way for him to get away from everything and relax. It's a freedom for him - a release from the pressures of being on stage with One Direction.

Niall's friendship with Rory McIlroy is another huge bonus. They only met for the first time in last 2014 in Australia, but they are very good friends now. Rory asked Niall to caddie for him at last year's Par 3 contest at Augusta, and we all know what happened when I interviewed them both on the ninth!

A moment to forget for One Direction's Niall Horan as he falls over at last year's Par-3 contest

Onto this year's Par 3 tournament, and what an incredible day. Nine holes in one, smashing the previous record of five, and an amazing round of 19 from Jimmy Walker. Gary Player's hole in one at the seventh was a real highlight - not bad for an 80-year-old!

It's always a lovely atmosphere all around the course, with players and fans alike relaxed and enjoying the day. The weather was perfect, dry and bright and not too hot.

As usual, I really enjoyed interviewing various players as they made their way to the ninth green, and it's always a pleasure to speak to Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. It was a shame Arnold Palmer wasn't there this year, but Tom Watson was a perfect stand-in.

Perhaps my highlight was when Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth arrived. Rickie and Justin both aced the fourth, and Jordan assumed I didn't want to speak to him as he had missed out. He walked off but I managed to lure him back for a few words.

When we watched their reactions to their holes in one, it made for great viewing and I'm pretty sure they had quite a few wagers going on in that star threesome.
