Ahead of the 41st Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National, we asked golf fanatic Will Greenwood to reflect on his favourite memories and moments in the competition...
First memory of the Ryder Cup
Belfry '85, Sam Torrance with his hands in the air after holing the winning putt. We were plucky losers for a long time, and it seemed that even if we led after two days we'd get done over in the singles.
I was lucky enough to be at Medinah for that incredible comeback, and I was up at Gleneagles to see another European win two years ago.
Favourite moment
There have been a few defining moments that illustrate a game is never done until you've shaken hands, like when Paul Azinger holed out from the bunker on the last hole at the Belfry in 2002. Niclas Fasth was one up and it looked like he would claim the winning point for Europe on the last day, but Azinger splashed into the hole and snatched a half, although it only delayed the inevitable!
There have been other similar moments, like when Monty came back from four down with four to play to grab a half against Mark Calcavecchia in 1991, and then obviously at Medinah we saw Ian Poulter in full flow, and then Justin Rose holing that huge putt on 17 against Mickelson and winning the last as well.
Favourite player, or pairing
It's hard to look past Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal. They were always so strong together and did so much to turn the Ryder Cup around in Europe's favour. Seve's legacy in the contest is immense, and it was fantastic at Medinah when we looked up and saw a plane towing a banner which read: "Do it for Seve".
Would you embrace the pressure?
I'd love to experience the pressure of playing in the Ryder Cup, and I'd certainly embrace it. I might shank it off the tee, or take six to get out of a bunker, but to be in the situation of having a putt to win, like Kaymer, or Langer, or McGinley? I'd love that.
Favourite winning moment
I was actually standing just a few feet away from Jamie Donaldson at Gleneagles when he hit that stunning wedge to a few inches from the hole to beat Keegan Bradley and win the Ryder Cup again for Europe. That was quite cool, to be there and witness the winning blow.
Prediction for this week
Europe have won three on the trot, and I reckon they can pull off another one. You look at the American side, and they're very good, all of them. But I think we can make it four in a row, and it's going to be another belting week. I'll be glued to it throughout.
