Ian Poulter says his confidence is restored ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. He finished runner-up at The Players Championship

Ian Poulter is looking to take care of qualifying for the US Open and The Open with a big performance in this week's BMW PGA Championship.

Poulter accepted an invitation to compete at Wentworth for the first time since 2014 shortly after his superb performance in The Players Championship, where he was joint-runner-up behind impressive young champion Si Woo Kim.

The 41-year-old vaulted to 80th in the world rankings having arrived at Sawgrass languishing at 195th, although he is still not exempt for the next two majors and remains uncertain about attempting to go through the qualifiers.

But Poulter is hoping his renewed confidence bodes well for another big week at European Tour headquarters, and he is looking forward to taking on the West Course following its extensive renovation over the last 12 months.

"I can't emphasise how big a week it was for me at Sawgrass," said Poulter, who thought he had lost his PGA Tour card when he missed the cut at last month's Valero Texas Open, only to be informed he had earned enough points on his major medical extension when a discrepancy in the calculations was noticed by veteran American Brian Gay.

"You know, from a perspective of a few weeks ago, having to sit down and try and work out some kind of a schedule, which wasn't looking very good, there wasn't any planning I could really do.

"So the change of playing well at The Players, to take care of my playing rights over there, to take care of a big move in the world rankings, that enabled me to travel back across the pond to play this week and also to be able to play a string of events in Europe this summer.

"That was something I really, really wanted to do, and obviously a few weeks ago, I couldn't commit to that. Now I'm in a position to do so, so from a mind-set perspective, I'm in a really good frame of mind. And when you're in a good frame of mind, generally good things happen."

When asked about his plans for US Open qualifying, he added: "Well, I'm hoping to win this week and then I'm in. All good things come from winning golf tournaments, so if I play well this week, and I win this week, then it takes care of that.

"Open qualifying is a last resort. I'm not sure if I'm going to need that resort, and I still haven't made a decision if I'm going to go over and try and qualify. But I'd like to take care of that this week. That's the plan."

Poulter has been critical of the layout and the conditioning since the West Course was transformed in 2010, but he is relishing the chance to take advantage of the latest overhaul, which included re-turfing all 18 greens.

"This tournament deserves a golf course in fantastic condition," he said. "It has been pretty much a flagship event for a very long time and it's the home of the European Tour. As long as I can remember being a kid, coming around watching Seve and Woosie and Faldo and all the guys, play this great golf course, you remember it.

"Everyone knows Wentworth and it really should be one of the best courses on the rota that we play. I'm absolutely delighted that it's been changed, because I think the changes last time, on a number of holes, were too severe. I think that's why the guys have obviously spent a lot of time figuring out what's going to make it a great golf course.

"But I'm personally very pleased that it has been changed, and because of that, I'm extremely excited to go out there and play, because I would love to walk out of Wentworth Golf Club and say, 'I absolutely love it'."
