Patrick Reed found himself in a terrible spot after pulling his drive way left on just the second hole of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart.

The American was fortunate to find his ball, which had nestled down in thick rough on a steep bank to the left of the fairway, and a huge clump of grass behind the ball left him barely able to make a backswing.

Reed struggled to gain a stance with the ball so far behind his feet, but he managed to scoop it out and down the bank although he was unable to advance it as far as the fairway. There were initial suspicions of a double-hit, but he was later cleared after reviewing TV footage.

But that was not the end of the trouble for the Ryder Cup star, who found it just as difficult to stay on his feet as he made his way down the bank as it was to extricate his ball from the knee-high grass.

He was grateful to a marshall for helping him to his feet after he slipped and took a nasty tumble, in which he appeared lucky to avoid injury, and he also took the time to make sure another marshall made it back to flat ground safely.
