Danny Willett feels he is still in with a chance of ending the season as European No 1, after an impressive third round kept him in contention at the DP World Tour Championship.

The 28-year-old came in to the week second in the Race to Dubai standings and knows he needs to finish above Rory McIlroy to have a chance of taking the season-long title, and stayed in the hunt thanks to a five-under 67 at Jumeriah Golf Estates.

After cancelling out an opening-hole gain with a dropped shot at the third, Willett picked up a stroke at the seventh before bouncing back from a couple of missed birdie chances around the turn to end his round strongly.

Danny Willett says he is proud of his performance on day three of the DP World Championship and is confident he has a lot left in the tank

Willett followed a birdie on the 14th by driving the green on the par-four next, where the tee had been brought forward, and holing from 30 feet for an eagle-two.

That lifted the world No 21 to 10 under, before Willett holed a ten-foot putt at the par-five last to keep himself close to the leaders.

"I started very similar to how yesterday was really with a pretty stale front nine and then missing a couple on the back nine," Willett told Sky Sports. "But we finished really strong to put us back somewhere back near.

"I don't think you're going to see him [McIlroy] going backwards, so I think we need to get to 17-under-par [for victory], so for us that would be a pretty good day.

"We just going to go out there and see how things are. Obviously we'll look at the weather, whether that's windy or calm, and see what the day gives us.

"Obviously playing with Rory on the first day there was a bit more of a buzz about it. We've worked our way back towards the back end of the field again which is nice, and hopefully a late tee time tomorrow will get the buzz back and help us try to do something good."

Willett currently trails McIlroy by 1,613 points and is one of six players who could prevent the world No 3 from winning his third Order of Merit in four seasons

Byeong Hun An, who needs a win this week to have any chance of ending No 1, birdied four of his final six holes to close a six-under 66.
