Rory McIlroy returns to Dubai this week to defend his DP World Tour Championship title, still with a chance of winning the Race to Dubai for a fourth time in five years.

McIlroy heads to the season finale fourth in the 2016 standings, but came to last year's event holding a narrow 1,613 point lead over nearest challenger Danny Willett in the Order of Merit.

The Northern Irishman came in to the weekend four strokes off the lead, but produced a round-of-the-day 65 on Saturday to move within one stroke and set up a Sunday shootout with Andy Sullivan.

Sullivan birdied four of his opening six holes in the final round to go three ahead, only for McIlroy to respond with a hat-trick of gains of his own.

McIlroy moved ahead when he picked up four shots in a five-hole stretch along the back nine, before recovering from finding the water off the penultimate tee to sink a 35-foot bogey and hold on to his lead.

With the Race to Dubai crown all-but assured heading to the last, McIlroy posted a cast-iron par at the 18th to claim a one-shot win and cement his place at the top of the season-long standings.
