Jason Gore found the ideal way to get himself back into contention at the Farmers Insurance Open as he made the first albatross of his career.
The American journeyman needed something to happen after an erratic start to his third round, and he found something magical at the par-five 18th - his ninth - on the South Course at Torrey Pines.
Facing a 250-yard approach over water to the iconic green, Gore's caddie persuaded him to put his two-iron back in the bag and opt for a high fade with a three-wood.
And the advice paid off as Gore's perfectly-struck shot from the fairway cleared the hazard and took a soft first bounce before rolling straight into the middle of the cup for only the second albatross in the tournament's history - and the first since David Edwards made a two on the same hole back in 1987.
Gore went on to card a two-under 70 and will go into the final round seven shots behind joint-leaders KJ Choi and Scott Brown.
