US Open runner-up Erik Compton has secured a place in the field for the Open Championship at Hoylake in a fortnight’s time.

The American, famous for undergoing two heart transplants, was competing in only the second major of his career at Pinehurst last month.

But the 34-year-old defied expectations to finish in a tie for second alongside Rickie Fowler, although both were eight shots adrift of runaway champion Martin Kaymer.

Compton will now make his Open debut at Royal Liverpool as he was one of the 10 highest-ranked non-exempt players in the world rankings at the end of last week.

The leading three non-exempt players in next week’s Scottish Open will also qualify, with one more place available at the John Deere Classic in Illinois.
