Justin Thomas shocked to see his birdie putt drop in the hole at Riviera

By Keith Jackson

Justin Thomas was certain he had missed this excellent chance for birdie at Riviera. Moments later, he was picking his ball out of the hole!

Justin Thomas was convinced he had missed a great opportunity for birdie midway through his first round of the Genesis Open, which explains his slightly embarrassed reaction to the putt dropping!

Thomas, playing in the marquee group at Riviera alongside Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, was level par for the day through seven holes before setting up the chance to get back under the card at the long 17th.

The PGA champion flicked a wedge to just inside 10 feet with his third shot but, after looking perplexed when trying to read the putt, he clearly thought he had missed the target as he walked after his ball immediately after sending it on its way.

However, he was soon looking surprised and delighted in equal measure when his ball found the bottom of the cup, and no doubt he was telling his caddie it looked in all the way!
